ASIA, Asia, the largest of the great divisions of the globe, contains an area of over 17 million square miles, and is, therefore, more than four times the size of Europe.
It is bounded on the North by the Arctic Ocean ; on the East by the Pacific Ocean ; on the South by the Indian Ocean; and on the West by the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Qural Mountains.
It is united to Africa by the Isthmus of Suez, through which, however, a canal has just been completed for the passage of ships into the Red Sea, and thence into the Indian Ocean; and is separated from America by Behring's Straits, which are about 36 miles across.
