Preface to Former Editions.

HE necessity for a practical work of instruction for

Fire Insurance Agents has been apparent for a long time, and our aim in preparing this book has been to embody in as concise a form as possible such matter as would be most valuable to the local agents. It has been prepared with great care, and is not only a practical school of instruction for those who are just commencing in the business, but also full of valuable suggestions even for the experienced agents. The old saying, "As the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined." is full of meaning, especially in the insurance business, and too great care cannot be bestowed upon the instructions given the new beginners, so that they may know what to do and the best method of doing it. In the arrangement of this book especial care has been taken to follow the natural sequence of the ordinary work incident to the fire insurance business, and we believe that agents who carefully study and practically carry out the instructions herein given, will find that their labors will be appreciated by their companies. The publishers trust this book will prove of assistance to the Underwriting Fraternity generally, and particularly serviceable to the local agents throughout the land.
