ERGOT-ITS USE AND ABUSE IN THE LYING-IN ROOM.* BY L. S. ORDWAY, M. D., ST. LOUIS. The subject of discussion in the Bureau of Obstetrics at the American Institute, held in this city (St. Louis), last June, was Dystocia. While the paper on Dystocia, in the third stage of labor, was conspicuous by its absence, it being the paper in which the use of Ergot would legitimately appear, nevertheless the use of Ergot was brought into discussion, and much said pro and con, and to my mind not all that was said on either side was wisely said. In Ergot we have one of those forces of nature capable of doing either great good or much harm. Like everything else having capacity for good it has its place, which is certainly not in every case of labor. I teach my class that it is not in any case of labor, while there is anything larger than the retained placenta in the uterine cavity. This may lean a little too far one *Read before the St. Louis Society of Homœopathic Physicians and Surgeons. |
