REGULATIONS FOR PAWNBROKERS OF GREATER NEW YORK

Pawnbrokers in New York City are regulated by statute. The rate of interest fixed by law is 3 per cent. a month or any fraction of a month for the first six months, and 2 per cent. a month for each succeeding month, upon any loan not exceeding $100; and 2 per cent. a month for the first six months and I per cent. a month for each succeeding month, on any loan exceeding $100. Pledges cannot be sold until after they have been kept one year, and then at public auction by a licensed auctioneer, after publication of at least six days in two daily newspapers designated by the Mayor. Pawnbrokers pay a yearly license fee of $500 to the City, and are under the control of the Mayor. The license is issued through the Bureau of Licenses, and their books must be kept open to the Mayor, Criminal Courts, Magistrates, and Police.
