GREATER NEW YORK RED BOOK CAB AND COACH FARES AS ESTABLISHED BY MUNICIPAL ORDINANCE Public Hacks and Hackmen Any carriage kept for hire shall be deemed a public hack; and a carriage intended to seat two persons inside shall be deemed a cab; and a carriage intended to seat more than two persons inside shall be deemed a coach; and the term "hackman" shall be deemed to include owner or driver, or both. Rates of Fare Prices given below are charged for the time the vehicle is occupied and not for return of vehicle to starting point. The legal rates of fare, of which an official copy shall be furnished by the Bureau of Licenses and carried by every licensed hackman, shall be as follows: Cabs or Hansoms By distance: For one mile or any part thereof. For each additional half mile or part thereof. For any stop over five minutes in a trip, for every fifteen minutes or fraction By distance: Coaches For one mile or any part thereof... For each additional half mile or part thereof. For any stop over five minutes in a trip, for every fifteen minutes or fraction By time: For one hour or any part thereof... For each additional half hour or part thereof. 1 50 75 For "Line Balls," for one or two passengers, two dollars for the first mile, or any part Every owner or driver of any hack shall carry on his coach or cab one piece of baggage, No cab or coach shall be driven by the time rate at a pace less than five miles an hour. General Notes All disputes as to distance or fares may be settled by the Chief of the Bureau of Licenses, Room 1, City Hall, or by the Captain or Sergeant or other officer in charge of the nearest police station to whom the matter is referred. Every hack shall have upon the glass sides of the lamps used at night, and also in a conspicuous place in the inside, the number of the license. Any person or persons who shall violate any or either of these provisions shall be liable to a penalty of ten dollars. Distances shall be reckoned as follows: From the Battery to City Hall Houston st. Twenty blocks going north or south, or seven blocks going east or west, will be considered a mile. Public Hack Stands, as a general rule, will be found in the vicinity of public parks, squares, railroad depots and other important centers.
