Corrected by Interurban Street Railway Company especially for THE MANHATTAN GUIDE

SURFACE STREET CAR SYSTEMS OF MANHATTAN

The Surface Street Car System of Manhattan is practically divided into two systems— the Metropolitan and the Third Avenue Systems.

Each of these systems allows extensive free transfer privileges between its own lines. The Third Avenue system also transfers with the Manhattan (Elevated) Railway system at all connecting and intersecting stations for three cents extra. The free transfer arrangements, which are practically identical on the two systems, are designed to permit a passenger to go from any part of the Borough to any other part in the same general direction for a single fare. Transfers given on cars running north or south (lengthwise of the city) permit you to continue either east or west on any crosstown line in the system, and, except on the lines south of 34th st, to retransfer to any other north or south line in the system, in the same direction in which the journey was started, the original transfer ticket being retained for that purpose. Transfer tickets are furnished on request, either by the conductor on the car or by an agent on the sidewalk at the point of transfer.

Fares on all lines, five cents, and children under four years of age are carried free.

The office of the Interurban Street Railway Company, controlling all lines in Manhattan, is at No. 761 Seventh ave.; the lost property office, No. 820 Eighth ave.

Owing to changes being made in motive power and routes, the information given is, of course, subject to change.
