and this tank is reentering south of the Island of Hawaii (slide 3). This was May of 1985.

This is the external tank (slide 4). Mr. Walker mentioned the Wright Brothers earlier. Their entire first flight could be conducted inside this tank. You will notice in the back of the tank a hole. That is a manhole cover that is three feet in diameter.

This is the neutral buoyancy facility at Marshall (Slide 5). There is a mockup of a tank in there, and astronauts have just taken the cover off the tank, which is bolted on, and they have practiced going inside the tank. They are practicing mounting some equipment in the pressurized volume of the hydrogen vessel.

This is a model, again, showing what this activity might look like in space (Slide 6).

This is the intertank that I mentioned Mr. Chairman (Slide 7). It is 5,000 cubic feet. Keep in mind that the shuttle cargo bay is 10,000 cubic feet. The oxygen vessel has been rolled back. It would actually occupy the space where I am standing there. But the space around the perimeter is available. There is a door to gain entry into this intertank volume. We have identified a specific science experiment. We are talking with NASA about this. We would like to fly it a year from now if we are given the go-ahead.

This was a model of what a tank might look like in orbit if it is modified to be used for a variety of purposes (Slide 8). It could be staffed. It has a micro-meteoroid shield on it which also serves as insulation for their communication and their power facilities.

I would like to point out that we are conducting discussions with major aerospace companies regarding the development of communications and power to start with the intertank flights that could then be amortized over 100 tanks or so if the tanks were awarded to the Space Phoenix Program. We think we can entice these companies to putting their own mind into developing these things if they can look to a market of that nature.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
