The verbs so denominated may be comprised in three classes, two of which are founded on a difference of origin, the third merely on a peculiar mode of inflection. They are as follows: (1) Such as have originally a Vav for their first radical; as 737-737. (2) Such as have their first radical properly Yod; as (3) Such as have their first radical assimilated in the Fut. &c., like verbs Pe Nun, § 66; thus from Pret. Kal. n the Fut. ny (n) loses its radical (") and retains only (") preformative, with Dagesh compensative in the next letter. § 70. Verbs Yod-1st Class, (Originally Pe Vav.) 1. The peculiarities of this class are as follows: -- (a) The Future in very many verbs has final e (..), in which case the first Yod quiesces in Tseri, but falls out at the same time, (b) The Tseri termination occurs also in the Inf. Const. and Imp., and then the initial () drops away by apheresis; as Inf. but in these conjugations it will be observed that it is quiescent except in the Inf., Fut. and Imp. of Niphal, where it is moveable; as NOTE. This original Vav also often discloses itself in derivative Nouns, especially such as begin with the formative letters or ; and יָלַד from) וָזַר and וָלָד but ; (יָרָה and יָרַד from) תּוֹרָה מוֹרָד as ) are less frequent. REMARKS. § 71. KAL. 1. FUTURE. The twofold termination of Tseri and Pattah obtains here, as and; the latter of course uniformly before the Gutturals. INFINITIVE. The Inf. Ps. 38. 6, altogether anomalous.. Abs. is regular. The Inf. Const. seldom appears in any other than the fem. Segolate form, as, Occasionally we meet with another fem. form, as 3 from With a Guttural Pattah is used of course, as for Prov. 24. 14. Segol for Kamets. Perhaps imperative. mixed forms comp. of Inf. Abs. and Const. i Jer. 42 10. (for it by apheresis of "). zi Is. 27. 11, (formed from according to § 26. 5). יְסוֹד Is. 51. 16. (formed from יסוד 3. IMPERATIVE. Several verbs here have Pattah, as 1, 2, py, (Kamets on account of accent). Where the Fut. is Tseri the Imp. usually takes a paragogic ♬, as (1), 77. When the tone is brought back to the penult, the Tseri is restored, as From we have both ( parag.) and . with apo cope of (3) occurs Ruth 1. 11; 77 makes Imper. 2 pers. pl. instead of to distinguish from Fut. 3d. pers. pl. 877. יְראוּ § 72. NIPHAL. 1. PRETERITE. The following vary somewhat from the usual form; (Vav omitted) Ex. 25. 22, for ; 71 Chron. 3. 5 (Dag. euphonic), a compound form from Pu. .נוֹלְדוּ and Niph. 2. INFINITIVE. The first radical here takes Dagesh by way of compensation for the excluded, as the form fully written out 3. FUTURE. The Yod is here sometimes retained instead of being exchanged for the original Vav; as Ex. 19. 13, Gen. 8. 12 (with tone retracted). In the first pers. sing. & always TIT instead of אִוּלֶד אִתָּשֵׁב has Hireq instead of the usual Segol, ,. With Gutturals the final vowel is, according to analo. gy, Pattah, as 77. 4. PARTICIPLE. Anomalies are Zeph. 3. 18, instead of i; .17 .9 .Ps נוֹקָשׁ for כּוֹקֵשׁ ; נוגות Lam. 1. 4, for נוגות § 73. PIEL. The only exception is in the Future, which preceded by Vav conversive, drops the first of its Yods, and writes it by a Dagesh in the second, as Nah. 1. 4, for ; Lam. 3. 33, for 1. PRETERITE. The Vav is sometimes here suppressed, as in, .Sam 1 יוֹדַעְתִּי for הוֹדַעְתִּי Once .חוֹרֶד but rarely the Yod, as ; הליד 21. 2, in for pain, Zech. 10. 6. 14, 19, for 2. INFINITIVE. The final vowel is sometimes Tseri, following the apocopate form of the future. Occasionally Yod is inserted with the Tseri, as in Is. 59. 4. We also meet with a 1 Sam. in; and within Ps. 113. 8, with 7 paragogic. 3. FUTURE. The characteristic of this conjugation (") is ordinarily excluded, but in the following cases it is retained: in for 17 Ps. 28. 7. .6 .116 .Ps יוֹשִׁיעַ for יְהוֹשִׁיעַ .17 .11 .Neh יוֹדֶה » יְהוֹסֵף .6 .81 .Ps יוֹסֵף יְהוֹדָה 66 With Vav conversive and retracted tone i instead of 7347 (1). The Vav is sometimes defectively written, as 7 for 17. Also Nepenthetic inserted, as Joan for ¬pin, Hos. 7. 12. 4. IMPERATIVE. With paragogic Hireq is usually retained; as (contracted to in). The Vav is sometimes retained ,17 .18 .Gen הוֹצֵא for הַוְצֵא ; 9 .5 .Ps חוֹשַׁר for הַוְשַׁר moveable, as The margin however in these cases exhibits § 75. HITHPAEL. and N. 1. This conjugation, like Piel, is regular. The only exceptions worthy of notice are, that it sometimes retains the original Vav, which it uses as moveable instead of Yod, as instead of 777 Lev. 5. 5; instead of n Mic. 6. 2. § 76. Verbs Yod-2d Class. (Originally Pe Yod.) 1. The flexion of this class is marked by the following peculiarities; viz. (a) The Fut. of Kal presents a threefold variety of form; as, 1977, and 97. Retraction of the tone as usual changes Tseri into Segol, as . (b) In Hiphil the original Yod הֵינִיק הֵילִין הֵיטִיב remains and quiesces in Tseri, as . 2. Niphal, in verbs of this class, does not occur. The Dageshed conjugations are regular throughout; as Piel, Pual, Hith. . Hophal conforms to the model in the preceding class, Hiphil alone therefore distinguishes this class from the first class of verbs Pe Yod. For this reason only Kal and Hiphil are given in full. 3. In the Pret. of Hiph. the form is often written defectively, as , instead of,.
