While interest in any war always centers upon the engagements being fought on land and sea, it often happens that the more unique aspects of the struggle are in the little asides seen back of the lines. Although such deeds are deplorable, probably the neighbors were half glad to see the wheezy old

organ wrecked by the London mob in a recent anti-German riot, while the "bobby" in the crowd looks on complacently. A reflection of the war is seen in New York, in Vernon Castle's recent acquisition-a sheepdog, invalided out of the German Red Cross Corps, after having seen service in Belgium. And last but not least, is the significance of the picture below; for back of the usual interest in the picture of a steamer limping into port, is the fact that the craft is the American ship Gulflight. disabled by a German submarine.
