With the opening of 1918 it was recognized that the most important work to which the Commonwealth Club could devote itself was that of assisting the government agencies that mobilize the resources of the country for the war with Germany and Austria. Much attention had been paid to the subject during 1917 (see Transactions Vol. XII, No. 5, "War Finance"; No. 6, "Civilian Organization for War"; No. 9, "Science in Mobilization," and "Progress Report for 1917" page 579). The luncheon addresses given by speakers from the military, or Red Cross or other relief forces, on the war front, proved of great value in educating a large section of the community to a knowledge of the meaning and purposes of the war. It was considered, however, that the time had come when the personal services of the members of the Club should be called for.

The Board of Governors therefore authorized the President to organize the entire membership, and Grant H. Smith was appointed chairman of a Section on War Service with this purpose in view. Appeals were made for members to enroll themselves for personal service in assisting the government agencies under one or more of the committees of the Section. These committees and their chairmen are as follows:

Red Cross-Beverly L. Hodghead, Chairman

Liberty Bonds-Charles R. Detrick, Chairman

War Savings Stamps-Maurice E. Harrison, Chairman

Food Production-D. O. Lively, Chairman

Food Conservation-Samuel Pond, Chairman

Labor Conservation-W. V. Stafford, Chairman.
Patriotic Information-F. J. Cooper, Chairman

Enrollment-Charles P. Cutten, Chairman
