DR. BENTLEY, of Bakersfield, received serious injuries recently by being thrown from his buggy.

DR. D. F. RAGAN, Health Officer of San Francisco, starts East on a month's leave of absence.

DR. J. L. Ross, of Redwood, contemplates erecting a sanatorium for convalescents at Woodside.

DR. H. N. GOFF, of San Bernardino, has returned home after a three months' visit in the East.

DR. JUILLY, of San Francisco, has converted the Spreckels' home on Mission Street into a sanatorium.

DR. W. H. BLEWETT, formerly of San Francisco, committed suicide in Seattle, September 8, 1904.

MR. HENRY PHIPPS has given $20,000 for the study of tuberculosis to the Johns Hopkins University.

DR. G. W. BOSKOWITZ has resigned from the position of Assistant Surgeon to the Emergency Hospital of San Francisco.

DR. JOSEPH E. YATES, of Le Grand, Merced Co., and MISS ELEANOR B. STUART, of Berkeley, were married September 10, 1904.

DR. H. H. SUTCLIFFE, of San Francisco, and MISS MARION ELIZABETH THOMPSON, of Santa Rosa, were married August 22, 1904.

DR. FRANK R. WOOLSEY, acting Health Officer of Berkeley, has been appointed County Physician, vice RUBERT N. ROWELL, resigned.

DR. CHAS. E. ADAMS, of Santa Clara, Cal., has gone East for post graduate study and a visit to his former home in Vermont.

WE are pleased to learn that the injury sustained by DR. W. J. WILHITE, of Modesto, by being thrown from his buggy, were not of a serious nature.

DR. F. F. TEBBETS, of Sacramento, died of ptomaine poisoning. The cause of the doctor's death was eating shrimp salad whilst on a visit to San Francisco.

DR. ROBERT KOCH, of Berlin, retires October 1, 1904, from his post as Director of the Institute for Infectious Diseases. He will be succeeded by DR. GAFFKY, of Giessen.

DR. R. A. CUSHMAN, of Los Angeles, tendered his resignation as County Physician in order to acccept the position of prison physician and surgeon at the San Quentin State penitentiary.

DR. M. B. CAMPBELL, retiring Superintendent of the Southern California State Hospital for the Insane, was presented with a gold watch on his retirement from the Institution, by the members of the Board of Managers. DR. A. P. WILLIAMSON is his successor.

DUNSMUIR, Calif., is to have a new hospital. PASADENA is to have a hospital for sick animals. JACKSON, California, is to have a new sanatorium. LONG BEACH is to have a new modern sanatorium. SANTA ANA is to have a new Christian Science HospitalA RED CROSS SANATORIUM is to be opened at Eureka, Calif.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY library building is to cost $750,000. It will have a capacity of 1,0 0,000 books.

GLENDALE, near Los Angeles, is the site purchased for the new Battle Creek Branch Sanatorium.

LOS ANGELES is to have a new college. This time it is known as the New Psychological Club of Los Angeles, of which DR. W. J. HANEY is President.

SAN FRANCISCO is to have a new hospital to be known as the St. Vincent Medical Association. The incorporators are Dr. J. P. Lefevre, J. C. Newton, and others.

LOS ANGELES is to have another large sanatorium. DR. J. H. MCBRIDE, DR. H. G. BRAINERD, DR. W. Barlow, Dr. M. B. CAMPBELL, and DR. NORMAN BRIDGE are the promoters.

NEW YORK PHYSICIAN, for several years past in New York Hospital Service, ex-Inspector New York Board of Health, etc., desires to associate with busy San Francisco practitioner, as ASSISTANT. IN MEMORIAM.

IN MEMORY OF DR. FRANK HOWARD PAYNE.

The Trustees and Faculties of the College of Physicians and Surgeons recall with deep regret the death, on August 8, 1904, of their friend and Fellow, Dr. Frank Howard Payne, who contracted a mortal disease in the practice of his profession while rendering humane service to the needy poor.

Dr. Payne was born October 30, 1850, at Fremont, Ill., was graduated from Rush Medical College, and practiced his profession in Berkeley, Calif., a quarter of a century, where he served as Health Officer many years.

WHEREAS, Dr. Payne has been Professor of Hygiene and Dietetics in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of San Francisco since 1896, bringing to his chair the wealth of his learning and experience, together with the earnestness and geniality that endeared him to the student, and made him a loved Fellow of the Faculties, be it

Resolved, That we, the Trustees and Faculties of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of San Francisco, extend to Mrs. Payne our heartfelt sympathies in her sad bereavement. We feel the loss deeply. We have lost an able teacher, a staunch friend and supporter. The profession has lost one of its most loyal devotees, and the poor, by the death of Dr. Payne, have lost one of their most capable and charitable advisors.

DR. JOSEPH NEWTON JOHNSTON.

Dr. Joseph Newton Johnston died at his home in San Jose, September 21, 1904. Dr. Johnston was born in San Jose, November 6, 1863. He graduated from Cooper
