The paper and type are good, and the many colored plates and illustrations are among the best we have seen. This is a new book on a new subject. It is well written, up-to-date, altogether a masterly production. There is no reason why the lungs should not be amenable to surgical treatment as well as the heart or any other organ of the body. Dr. Ricketts has given to the medical profession one of the most valuable works of modern times. He has shown by practical experience the possibilities of heart and lung surgery. The results will justify what has been attempted and what may be expected to follow.

REGIONAL MINOR SURGERY. By GEORGE GRAY VAN SCHAICK, Consulting Surgeon to French Hospital, New York. Second edition, enlarged and revised, 228 pages, bound in cloth, profusely illustrated. Price, $1.50. International Journal of Surgery Co., New York.

The practicability and usefulness of this book is best indicated by the demand, necessitating a second edition in

an unusual short time. This edition has been subjected to a thorough revision and additional chapters have been added. The author's object, to furnish the general practitioner with such practical information on minor surgical conditions as will be of the greatest service to him in his daily practice, has been well accomplished. Subjects of a technical character have been avoided, and only the most applicable methods demonstrated by twenty years private and hospital experince are presented. The book is liberally illustrated with original sketches and is so eminently practical and useful we believe it will be run through many more editions.

PROGRESSIVE MEDICINE. Vol. III, September, 1904. A Quarterly Digest of Advances, Discoveries and Improvements in the Medical and Surgical Sciences. Edited by HOBART AMORY HARE, M. D., Professor of Therapeutics and Materia Medica in the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. Octavo, 284 pages, 19 illustrations. Per annum, in four clothbound volumes, $9.00; in paper binding, $6.00, carriage paid to any address. Lea Brothers & Co., publishers, Philadelphia and New York. The character of this quarterly is already so well known, both to the press and to the public at large, that a formal introduction is perhaps superfluous. It has, in the past, aimed to combine a thorough and scientific spirit, such as animates the best of the European publications, with an enjoyable and readable manner of presentation. "Progressive Medicine" must be itself progressive, and we firmly believe that in certain particulars this latest issue of the series will be found to have even outstripped its predecessors.

TAYLOR ON GENITO-URINARY AND VENEREAL DISEASES AND SYPHILIS. A Practical Treatise for Students and Practitioners. By ROBERT W. TAYLOR, A. M., M. D., Clinical Professor of Genito Urinary Diseases in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York. New (3d) edition. Revised and enlarged. Octavo, 757 pages, with 163 illustrations and 39 plates in colors and monochrome. Cloth, $5.00; leather, $6.00; half morocco, $6.50, net. Lea Brothers & Co., publishers, Philadelphia and New York. 1904.

This is a very comprehensive work, embracing, as it does, the entire range of diseases affecting the genitourinary organs of both sexes, excepting those which are purely gynecological. In addition to the non-specific ailments, gonorrhea in all its phases and syphilis in all its conditions and relations have been fully considered. The author has endeavored to present trustworthy, conserva

tive and practical treatment in full detail, and while surgery proper has received ample attention, it is considered as being but a part and not the whole of genito-urinary therapeutics. In preparing this third edition the author has endeavored, as in previous editions, to present a practical, up-to-date, compact treatise, adapted equally to the needs of students and practitioners. His aim has been to avoid both the tediousness of an encyclopedia and the disappointing brevity of a compend, and to present a thorough, systematic description of the cognate subjects treated in a terse, clear manner. This new edition has been most thoroughly revised to date. Many new sections have been added to present the salient features of progress. Dr. Taylor's work has always been known for its rich series of illustrations, and in this addition many new engravings and plates have been added. It is worthy of note that nearly all of the illustrations in this volume have been made under the personal supervision of the author from his

own cases.

THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF INFANT FEEDING, with Notes on Development. By HENRY DWIGHT CHAPIN, A. M., M. D., Professor of Diseas s of Children at the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital; Attending Physician to the Post-Graduate, Willard Parker and Riverside Hospitals; Consulting Physician to the Rindall's Island Hospital. Octavo volume, 356 pages, profusely illustrated by line and half-tone engravings and charts. Price, bound in musl n, $2.25, net. William Wood and Co., publishers, New York.

The first edition of Dr. Chapin's book was accorded a most flattering reception by the medical profession of this country, and an edition was sold simultaneously in England. The call for a new edition, less than two years after publication, is good evidence of the popularity of the work. The second edition has been thoroughly revised, and in every particular brought up to date. The large amount of work done with modern and improved methods in the comparative chemical examination of breast milk and cow's milk has resulted in the disappearance of many of their supposed differences. Cow's milk has been proven nonacid in reaction. Very important discoveries pertaining to cow's milk have recently been made, among which are some of the changes that take place in the digestion of milk, all of which tends to make clearer the physiology of milk and the true principles of artificial infant feeding.
