Brooklyn.

The park system of Brooklyn and Queens consists of 34 parks, with a combined area of 1,619% acres. In addition there are 14 small gore parks, from one-fourth to one-half acre each, and twenty parkways with total mileage of 421⁄2 miles, which are controlled by the Park Department, of which Geo. V. Brower is Commissioner, and Robert T. Brown, secretary, with offices at Room 14, Borough Hall, Brooklyn. For other employes of the Park Department, see City Government chapter.

PROSPECT PARK, MONUMENTS, ETC. The construction of Prospect June, Park began in 1866, and the land (516 1-6 acres) $3,919,370, while its cost construction $6,000,000. cost Some of its special features about magnificent driveways, walks, its flower gardens, are its lakes for boating and skating, and its statues. The Palm House is located at the Greenhouses, 7th st. and 9th av. (Prospect Park W.), and is one of the most beautiful sights of the Park.

The statuary in the Park includes the bronze figure of J. S. T. Stranahan, bronze busts of John ing, Beethoven and Howard Payne, Thomas Moore, Washington IrvMozart. shaft In Aug., 1895, was erected on the slope of Lookout Hill to the memory of the four hundred Maryland soldiers who defended the rear of the American Army upon its retreat after the Battle of Long Island. It was erected by the Baltimore Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, in conjunction with the Park Dept.

The bronze statue of Major-Gen. Gouverneur Kemble Warren, near Memorial Arch, in the park plaza, was unveiled on July 4, 1896. statue of Abraham Lincoln is placed in the front The bronze part of the Flower Garden, overlooking the lake. by popular subscription. Immediately fronting the Park is the Plaza, Morningside surrounded by mounds covered with pines and attractive shrubbery. In the center is an immense electric fountain, built in 1897. South of the foun- Mt. Morris tain and facing the main entrance to Prospect Park is the Soldiers and Sailors' Memorial Arch, Mulberry Bend erected to the memory of the soldiers and sailors Paradisɔ who lost their lives in the war of the Union. The Park Av. Parks.. bas reliefs were prepared by Maurice J. Power, and show Lincoln and Grant on horseback, reviewing the army after the fall of Richmond. The arch in 1898 was further adorned by a bronze group on top, called the Quadriga, designed by Frederick MacMonnies; in 1900. two massive groups, one representing the Army and the other the Navy, for the sides.

At Gate 3, on the 9th av. side of Prospect Park. are two bronze panthers on pedestals. At Gate 4. at the Ocean Parkway entrance, are two specimens of bronze work in the shape of an athlete taming wild horses.

Two bridges connecting Shore Drive with Fort Hamilton av. have been completed during 1901 and will conect, when macadamized road under them is completed, the Shore Drive with the other systems of parkways.

BROOKLYN FOREST PARK, Brooklyn Forest is a natural woodland park extending from the boundary of Highland Park as far as Richmond Hill, in Queens. It cost about $1,150,000. From its high points are obtained magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. Jamaica Bay and Long Island Sound. Roads have been made through and the main road is macadamized. The park drive leads into fine macadam roads connecting with Astoria, Flushing, the military reservation at Creedmoor, Whitestone, Queens and the north side of Long Island.

CENTRAL PARK. Central Park cost over $15,000,000. It extends from 59th st. to 110th st., 21⁄2 miles, and from 5th av. to 8th av., over half a mile, with an area of 840 acres. The landscape architects were Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Following are some of the principal features: At 59th st. and 5th av. the Scholars' Gate, adorned by a bust of Von Humboldt, unveiled 1874. In the southwest part is the playground and carrousel for children, and beyond is the common lawn of 16 acres. The Menagerie is in the southeast part, clustered around the old Arsenal building. The mall is a broad promenade, a quarter of a mile long and 208 feet wide, bordered by double rows of elm trees and famous for the collection of statues, prominent among which are: Shakespeare, by J. Q. A. Ward, erected on the 300th anniversary of the poet's birth; Burns and Scott; the "Indian Hunter," by Ward; Fitz Greene Halleck, and a colossal Beethoven bust. Near by is the Music Pavilion.

The Terrace, a sumptuous pile of richly carved masonry, and the Lake come next in view, and the famous Bethesda fountain, designed by Emma Stebbins and made in Munich. Beyond the lake is the Ramble, 36 acres, passing a bust of Schiller, rustic cabins, gorges and waterfalls. Farther on is the Belvedere, a tower of stone; next are the city reservoirs. On the left is the American Museum of Natural History. Admittance free, except on Mondays and Tuesdays (25c.). Open (free) Tuesday and Saturday evenings. Opposite the Obelisk and near 5th av. and 83d st. is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Admittance free except Mondays and Fridays (25 cents); Monday and Friday evenings, 8 to 10.

The new greenhouses, opened 1899, cost $55,000; located 300 feet south of E. 106th st. entrance.

The parks of The Bronx are magnificent in area facilities for sports. There are 13 base ball, 5 foot and beauty. Special attention has been given to ball fields and 85 tennis courts.

Pelham Bay Park has seven miles of water New frontage on L. 1. Sound and Pelham Bay. golf course has been opened of 9 holes.

Van Cortlandt Park is accessible by the N. Y. and Northern R. R., the several trolley lines running through Jerome av. and the Kingsbridge trolley. Its objects of interest are the Colonial Mansion and Museum, under the charge of the Society of Colonial Dames; the lake, covering 11 acres; the parade ground, the largest in the State, the deer range and an 18-hole golf course, covering a lineal area of 5 miles.

Bronx Park is in the northern central section of the borough. The northwestern section of 250 acres has been assigned to the Botanical Society. The beautiful Botanical Museum Building cost city $400,000. The treasurer is J. Pierpont Morgan. Botanical Gardens are free to the public at all times. The southeastern section of the park, comprising 261 acres, is in charge of the Zoological Society. The plan comprises 55 different series of buildings, cages and ranges. Admittance free, except on Mondays and Thursdays (25c.) The president of the society is Levi P. Morton; director, Wm. P. Hornaday. Bronx Park is reached by 3d av. elevated to 161st st.. with transfer to West Farms; to 177th st., with transfer to the Tremont av. trolley as far as the Southern Boulevard; to 177th st., with transfer to the 3d av. trolley as far as Fordham. The last route carries one to the northwest entrance.

Crotona Park contains the new municipal building for all public offices in the borough (excepting Park Dept.) It is reached direct by the 3d av. elevated to 177th st.

Claremont Park contains the old Zbrowski Mansion, now used as the offices of the Park Dept. of the borough. This park has some magnificent specimens of trees, including the royal English oak. English bronze beeches, Norway pines, Italian and other rare specimens of foreign forest growths. St. Mary's Park is in a thickly populated section and often has an attendance of 8,000 at the Sunday concerts in the summer season.

Cedar Park overlooks the Harlem River. McComb's Dam Bridge Park, on the Harlem River, at Jerome av., is now the headquarters of the rowing clubs, formerly situated between the 3d av. bridge and the Madison av, bridge.
