The Courts.

The courts having jurisdiction in New York County are: Supreme Court, Surrogate's Court, City Court of the City of New York. The Supreme Court is the highest court of original jurisdiction in all actions in law and equity and in criminal cases. The County of New York forms the First Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and the First Judicial District. The Supreme Court is divided into four parts-special terms for trials. of which there are eight parts, and trial terms of which there are twelve parts: supreme court. criminal branch; appellate term, to try appeals from City and Municipal Courts; appellate division, to hear appeals from the special and trial terms and from the appellate terms; also from the Surrogate's Court of New York County, and the courts of general and special sessions (criminal).

The City Court has jurisdiction in common law actions involving property to the value of $2,000. The Surrogate's Court has the same jurisdiction in New York County as Surrogate in Kings County, which see.

There are eleven Municipal Courts in Manhattan and two in The Bronx having jurisdiction in civil cases involving property to the value of $250.

The Court of General Sessions has jurisdiction

as a city court in criminal cases.

The Court of Special Sessions, held by 3 city magistrates, tries cases without jury for minor

causes.
