The tonnage during the season just closed on the State canals as compiled in the office of the Superintendent of Public Works, shows a total of 3,420,613 tons as against 3,345,941 tons during the season of 1900. This is an increase of 74,672 tons for the season. notwithstanding the fact that the navigation period during 1991 was nearly three weeks shorter than during the year 1900. This is nearly sufficient time, under ordinary conditions, for the round trip, so that had the length of the season been the same as last year, the business of the canals as reflected in tonnage figures would have very greatly exceeded that of any season in many years. 27 215 C.L. Furman, Soc.-D. 808 43 J.F. Kennedy, Cit.-U 606 The excess of tonnage for the season over that of 1900, covering the same period, is 192,323 tons. Coming to the specific freight movement the statistics show there was an increase in way freight east of 160,033 tons, while there was a decrease in way freight west of. 35,337 tons, leaving a total increase in way freight of 124,696 tons. This would indicate that the increased business on the canals is very largely made up of way shipments, since the increase in through freight east is only 1,015 tons, while there was an actual decrease in through freight west of 51,039 tons. The total increase in tons east was 161,048, while there was a total decrease in tons west of 86,376. 6887 3821 4862 26. 28. 29. 10493 6760 3142 6962 2869 6894 2923 9539 7014 6738 7426 2232 2818 2928 6887 2876 6710 4812 1669 2767 1705 2720 1689 2726 4382 1731 1670 1668 2747 1889 2710 4932 2069 5023 2107 4969 3889 3184 4016 3227 8978 3261 2417 3287 2496 3223 3397 3287 3382 35.. 2414 5163 2322 3804 2654 $226 3:239 3424 3224 3343 4197 4280 8726 Assembly Districts.
