ion, succeeding John A. Glass, who has become city manager of Los Angeles.

Mr. W. D. Wild, formerly of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, has been appointed division chief operator of the Southern Division.

Mr. C. D. Carter, formerly cashier of the Northwestern Telephone Company and later employed in the traffic department of the sub-license office, has been appointed chief clerk of the Los Angeles Exchange.

The officials of the Southern Division have been much pleased with the attention which they have received from the general office in San Francisco, and our many experiences have warranted expressions of this character.

Mr. A. E. Adams, who has been for some time wire chief in Riverside, Cal., has been transferred to Los Angeles sub-main office. Mr. J. A. Haversteck succeeds Mr. Adams at Riverside.

The Los Angeles Express, an evening paper, publishes daily a series of comments entitled "Twenty-five Years Ago." On September 6 the following item appeared: "There were 118 telephones connected in Los Angeles to-day." This gives an idea of the marvelous growth experienced in the telephone movement during the last thirtyfive years, or, in fact, during the time that the telephone has been known, either as a commercial possibility or as a toy.

On Saturday, September 7, at 8 p. m., Mr. C. M. Seeley, division superintendent, gave a smoker at his residence, to which were invited the following: J. E. Franklin, division chief clerk; E. H. Long, division wire chief; John A. Glass, Los Angeles city manager; G. R. Calio, division contract agent; J. C. Robinson, city contract agent of Los Angeles, and W. D. Wilde, division chief operator. This was the first of a series of similar meetings to be held throughout the winter, the object being to create a closer relationship and to bring about better cooperation. Business matters were discussed and the conversation drifted into farmer lines, as outlined in the September issue of THE PACIFIC TELEPHONE MAGAZINE, and later into toll and local business, as well as developing certain parts of the Los Angeles territory. The party broke up at midnight after a most enjoyable evening.

On August 23, at 7 p. m., the various supervisors and chief operators in the Los Angeles Exchange congregated in the division office in order to institute a series of gen

eral monthly meetings. The session opened with the division chief operator as temporary chairman, and after deciding to organize a chief operators' association the nominations for permanent chairman and secretary were made. Miss Joyce, chief operator of the South Exchange, was unanimously nominated for permanent chairman, and the temporary chairman instructed the secretary to cast one ballot electing her as such. The nominations for secretary were: Miss McNeal, assistant chief operator, Main Exchange; Miss Noel, clerk traffic department; Miss Beard, acting chief operator, sub-Main Exchange, and Miss Thomas, of Chief Operator Boyles' office. After the officers had been installed a general discussion on supervision and manner of holding operators' meetings by supervisors was held. After a two hours' session the meeting broke up with the hearty approval of all concerned. This movement has met with the support of the division superintendent and promises to be a great success. Each meeting there will be two or three supervisors or chief operators appointed to read papers on subjects of interest, and a general discussion will follow.

The new exchange building shown in the picture, that at San Mateo, is typical of the style of building being erected in the Coast territory for use of The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. In most cases the new buildings are built on land owned by the company and are designed by its engineering department. This building has been rented for a long term, and is in every way desirable.

The San Mateo plant is to be entirely reconstructed. with a conduit of several blocks on the principal streets leading to the office, and practically all of the remaining construction is cable. The estimates have been approved and work is to be begun

rushed. The switchboard equipped will consist of a No. 8 common battery, with present capacity for 1500 stations and ultimate capacity of 4000.

The construction department is now engaged in extending the underground in Berkeley, where some excellent work is being done. A 400-pair cable will be laid from the exchange to Shattuck Avenue and Ashby avenue and will be extended as a 200-pair cable to Shattuck Avenue and Woolsey Street. Another 400-pair cable will extend from the exchange to Bancroft Way and Catherine Street, and a third from the office to Shattuck avenue and Vine Street, this latter being extended as a 200-pair cable to Shattuck Avenue and Rose Street. Aerial cable will branch from the ends of each of these cables, giving the city a first-class cable system.

A branch exchange has been built in the Piedmont district, Oakland, and an elaborate underground conduit system is being constructed. In order to take care of the business until a cut-over to the new exchange is possible, however, a 300-pair cable is being laid to the main office.

F. E. Stuart, equipment inspector at San Francisco, has resigned to go into business. for himself. His resignation is effective November 1. No one has yet been appointed to succeed him.

We can not make bargains for blisses

Nor catch them like fishes in nets,
And sometimes the thing our life misses
Helps more than the thing which it gets.
For good lieth not in pursuing

Nor doing of great nor of small,
But just in the doing and doing
As we would be done by is all.

-Phoebe Cary.

"Thy lot or portion in life," said the Caliph Ali, "is seeking after thee; therefore be at rest from seeking after it."

Toll Line to be Rebuilt

The construction department faces an interesting work in the reconstruction of a part of the toll line between Reno and Sacramento, plans for which have recently been approved. The line which is to be rebuilt extends from Cowles to Colfax, a distance of eighty miles, through mountainous country. The work must be completed before the winter season and in order that this may be accomplished it will be begun in a very few days. The poles have been delivered along most of the right of way. Standard construction will be the rule throughout and a splendid job is promised. Between twenty and forty men will be employed on the work under direction of Mr. H. O. Jackson, district superintendent of construction, with headquarters at Stockton.

The company's new toll line between Merced and El Portal (the entrance to the Yosemite Valley), which was a most difficult construction, is considered a first-class job in every respect. The work was completed about August 1.

A Challenge

The boys employed in San Francisco by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company have organized a baseball team. We have it on excellent authority that this team is capable of "wiping the earth" with any aggregation of telephone batters hereabouts, and the boys desire it known that they are ready and anxious to meet all comers. The average age is fifteen years. A. Wake is captain and F. Graber is manager.

We have the following interesting intelligence from Mr. Joe F. Klink, County Manager at Canyon City, Oregon:

Miss Ella Martin, who has been Manager of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph office at Canyon City, Ore., for the past three years has handed in her resignation to take effect September 30th. Miss Martin is to be married soon to Mr. Dan Powers. Mr. Powers is a bright young business man and is engaged in the furniture business in this city. Mr. Powers is to be congratulated, as Miss Martin, while in the employ of our company, has shown herself to be a young lady of rare business ability, whose resignation is regretted by the patrons of this office.

Miss Edith Robinson has been appointed to the position of Manager of the Canyon City Office to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Martin.

Mr. Klink adds a note which is more interesting than the news item. Here is what he says:

I claim the banner for our Canyon City office, in the matrimonial line, having married off five operators in the past eight years. Considering that this office is equipped with but one position switchboard, you can see that good service meets with its reward.
