[blocks in formation]

THIS Periodical has now entered upon the forty-first year of its existence. During this long period it has, we believe, through the Lord's help, done some humble service to the cause of genuine Truth and Goodness; that is, to the cause of genuine Christianity in the world.

In its pages are found some of the best sentiments and ideas of Clowes, Hindmarsh, Sibly, and of many others who, at an early period, laboured in this new vineyard of the Lord, and who, we trust, are now partaking of the fruits of their labours in the Lord's kingdom above.

In its volumes are also found recorded the germs of some of those institutions which have been highly instrumental in spreading a know. ledge of the Truths of the New Jerusalem. Our Tract and Missionary Societies, our Educational establishments for the instruction of poor children in useful knowledge, and in the pure doctrines of the Word of God, have all had their origin proclaimed in this Periodical, and which, through its advocacy, have been brought, under Providence, to certain states of efficiency in their respective fields of usefulness.

The progressive history of our Printing Societies, both in London and Manchester, may also be traced in this Periodical, and, in general, the history of the formation of the church in its feeble beginnings in this country, and in other lands, may be found in its pages.

At the consummation of a church nothing meets with so many hostile N. S. NO. 145.
