LEE & SHEPARD'S NEW BOOKS.

"In itself a marvel of art."

THE

PRINCES OF ART.

PAINTERS, SCULPTORS, ENGRAVERS,
AND ARCHITECTS.

TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH

BY MRS. S. R. URBINO.

12mo, Illustrated,

$2.00 "Beautiful alike in matter, style, and typographical elegance. Treating the very highest phases of art, it is in itself a marvel of art."-Northampton Press.

"Written with French enthusiasm and vivacity, and exceedingly well translated."-Buffalo Express.

"We have seldom found a work of this kind combining so many points of interest as this. The selections of masters who have made the fine arts illustrious by their genius is judiciously made, the outlines of their lives are gracefully sketched, and enough of incident and anecdote is interwoven to throw an attractive charm around the record of bare facts."-Providence Journal.

"This is one of the most readable volumes of the day upon Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers. It contains lively sketches of the great artists of modern and ancient times, and is gotten up in a style worthy a place in the best libraries of the land."-Cincinnati Times.

"One hardly knows which to admire most, the skill which planned such an epitome as this, or the exquisite taste with which the theory is worked through to a result."-Dover Star. A Timely Work on China.

GERMAN

AND FRENCH.

THE TEXT-BOOKS

OF

Yale, Harvard, University of Virginia,

AND MOST SIMILAR INSTITUTIONS.

WHITNEY'S GERMAN COURSE.

I. A Grammar. 12mo. $1.75. This, besides presenting the main facts of the language in a more precise and apprehensible form than its predecessors, and one involving in a higher degree the results of comparative grammar, also directs attention to some subjects which are wont to be insufficiently treated-as, the derivations and connections of words, the construction of sentences, and the correspondences of German and English, and their grounds. Different sizes of type make a careful distinction of the contents, according to their importance, that the teacher may be guided in the gradual introduction of the pupil to the more difficult matters. In an Appendix is given a series of progressive exercises in writing German, intended to impress, by practice, the grammatical rules and modes of construction. (New Edition, with Appendix, will be ready Sept. 1.)

II.-A Reader, with Vocabulary and Notes. 12mo. $2.00. Arranged upon a progressive plan, as follows: 1. Pieces of easy narrative prose; 2. Poetic pieces; 3. Extracts from dramatic masterpieces; 4. Prose pieces in more elaborate style. The Notes are intended to explain the real difficulties, including the idioms and their origin; they contain abundant references to the grammar. The Vocabulary attempts to do considerably more than the current dictionaries, in the way of exhibiting the derivations of words and of their meanings, and the correspondences between German and English. (New Edition, with Vocabulary and Notes, will be ready Sept. 1.)

OTTO'S GERMAN GRAMMAR.

12mo. $1.75. Is too well known to need description. Before the publication of Whitney, it was the text-book at Harvard, Yale, University of Virginia, University of Michigan, and many other institutions of almost equal prominence. At most of them, Whitney's Course is now used in conjunction with Otto, and in some places has superseded it; in spite of which facts, the circulation of Otto is rapidly increasing, while it gains recognition as incomparably the best of the "ConversationaL" methods. Whitney, being on the so-called “ SCIENTIFIC " method, has, however, no competitor where intellectual “drill " is a principal object.

EVANS'S OTTO'S GERMAN READER. 12mo. $1.50. To accompany Otto's German Grammar; with Notes, including references to the Grammar, and a full Vocabulary. By Prof. E. P. Evans, of the University of Michigan.

OTTO'S FRENCH GRAMMAR.

Revised by Prof. Ferdinand Bocher. 12mo. $1.75. Has always enjoyed the same popularity as Otto's German Grammar, and has not found any successful competitor on its own principles, or on any other.
