Then shall be said one or more of the following Prayers:

GOD of light eternal, we look to thee. Though clouds are round about thee and the shadow lies upon us here, we know that thy mercy is undimmed; and with perfect trust we wait for thee, as they whose eyes watch for the morning. Do with us as thou wilt: call us to our work or to our rest: bid us take up our burden or lay it down. Abide with us by night and day; and be our strength to do and bear thy perfect will. Amen.

ALMIGHTY GOD, in whom are all our

ways; we lift our souls to thee: raise us above the shadows of earth into the light of thy countenance and the comfort of thy presence. We thank thee for the dear and faithful dead, through whom heaven becomes our home. As one by one thou dost gather them out of the earthly light into thy heavenly glory, may we dwell together in thy faith and love, and in that hope which is full of immortality. Amen.

MOST merciful Father, who hast been

pleased to take unto thyself the soul of thy servant; grant to us who are still in our pilgrimage and who walk as yet by faith, that, having served thee with constancy on earth, we may be joined hereafter with thy blessed saints in glory everlasting, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

UNTO God's gracious mercy and protection we commit you. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace, both now and for ever more. Amen.

THE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

The Psalter.

A SELECTION FROM

THE PSALMS OF DAVID.

The First Day.

MORNING PRAYER.

PSALM I.

BLESSED is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

PSALM III.

LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God.

But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill.

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people.

HE

PSALM IV.

EAR me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame?

But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.

Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.

There be many that say, Who will show us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God;

Be honor and glory, through Jesus Christ, for ever and ever. Amen.

EVENING PRAYER.

PSALM V.

GIVE ear to my words, O Lord; consider my

meditation.

Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
