THE second part of the "Congregational Church Hymnal" consists of Metrical Litanies, set to tunes of appropriate metre; the Ancient Hymns of the Church; selections from the Book of Psalms, and from other parts of Holy Scripture, pointed and arranged for chanting, and set to chants-single, double, or quadruple; and passages from the Book of Revelation, arranged partly for chanting and partly in choral recitative form. The text of the portions of Scripture selected is taken from the Authorized Version, as less likely to lead to difficulty and confusion than the adoption, under present circumstances, of the Revised Version; and the Editor hopes the inclusion of an unusually large number of poetical passages of the Old Testament, in addition to the copious selection from the Book of Psalms, will render this portion of the work specially valuable in Congregational Church worship.

The passages from the Book of the Revelation have been treated so as to form a transition from the Chants to the Anthems, contained in the third part of the Hymnal; and, while their setting is such as to present no serious difficulty
