saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else!"

Having thus spoken, the Gracious-hearted One did not keep out of the way, that He might not be seen; but as "God manifest in the flesh," straight to earth He came that men might look at Him! When down here He was seen as the Sin-bearer. The Lord had "laid on Him the iniquity of us all!" As our Substitute, that wondrous Lord Jesus Christ obeyed the law for us; carried the burden of our imputed guilt to the accursed cross; and then on Calvary He became "a curse for us!" bore our punishment in His own body there!-left us none to bear !-and so, by the shedding of His precious blood, made a complete atonement for sin, that He might equitably pardon it. And now

"There is life for a look at the crucified One!"

He

for He is no longer a dying or a dead Redeemer. He so fully satisfied the claims of justice on behalf of sinful man, that it was not needful He should be detained in the prison of the tomb. God, the Judge of all, raised Him from the dead! and having received and secured the gifts of pardon and full salvation for the rebellious, He ascended on high, where, as the sinner's representative, He ever lives to plead for us. Now, He says: "To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and that trembleth at My word."

PREFACE.

Through the atonement, God can look pardon, and look salvation, when He looks at man! And He does look thus at us! and would have us look trustingly to Him. When on earth, did not the Lord Jesus put Himself in the way of sinful men? Did He not look them straight in the face, and say, "Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavyladen, and I will give you rest"?

Now the Lord Jesus Christ has been taken at His word. Multitudes, of various kindreds, peoples, and tongues, have believed His messages, and have looked believingly and lovingly to Him as the Faithful Promiser. Nor have they looked in vain. We appeal to the facts given in this volume,—facts given upon the testimony of the individuals referred to, or upon the testimony of other most reliable witnesses who were mixed up with or formed the subjects of the incidents narrated.

Great pains have been taken to verify the facts quoted in this volume. Where authorities are not given in connection with the cases, they are as far as possible given in the index. We affirm that the harmonious conclusion of these witnesses is, that the most delightful rest, peace, and joy, have been realized in their spirits, and in the spirits of those who have believingly fallen in with God's plan of saving mercy; and that these have received such promised blessings from the hands of the Allsufficient Saviour Himself.

The marvellous change of feelings, character, and conduct, which follows from a believing look at the Lord Jesus Christ, a personal application to Him, and an individual reception of Him as God's unspeakable gift, we call CONVERSION TO GOD. Such cases are so numerous, so striking, and so real, that they form a study of deepest interest, heart-profit, and encouragement; and it is the hope and prayer of the writer of this work that the illustrations here given may prove to be such in the experience of its readers.

In one of the closing chapters of this volume, well authenticated cases are given, to prove how great are the advantages of a strong faith in Him in whom is centred "all power in heaven and in earth," even to the poor body and its earthly surroundings.

May every reader of this book be encouraged to have much personal dealing with that Mighty One who tenderly loves them, and is able to do for them "exceeding abundantly above all they can ask or think."
