This compilation covers the period from January 1, 1860,* to January 1, 1887, and contains the laws and ordinances relating to railroad, electric light, steam heating, stage, gas and telegraph companies in the City of New York, as well as to the establishment of ferries. The compilation was prepared in the office of the Counsel to the Corporation. It was begun by the Hon. E. Henry Lacombe, continued by his successor, the Hon. Morgan J. O'Brien, and finished by the Hon. Henry R. Beekman. It shall not be lawful hereafter to lay, operate, etc., any railroad in, &c., any street or avenue of New York City, wherever such road may commence or end, except under the authority and subject to the regulations and restrictions which the legislature may hereafter grant and provide. This section not to be deemed to affect the operation, so far as laid, of any railroad now constructed and duly authorized, nor held to impair, in any manner, any valid grant for or relating to any railroad, in said city, existing on January 1, 1860. § 2.
