The physician who is ready with an ill-word for every professional brother, and who belittles the work of his confreres on each and every occasion, has the smudge-that-won't-come-off.

Among other things the Institute was noted for the large attendance, the number and excellence of the papers presented, and the enthusiasm and activity of the younger members.

THE NEED OF VENTILATION.

Various city ordinances relating to the sanitary and hygienic welfare of our citizens are on the statute books. It is well to note that few or none of these are directed toward the securing of proper ventilation and room There is no effective law to prevent the overcrowding of the tenement rooms and a study of these conditions will reveal a frightful state of affairs in this respect,-whole families, ten and twelve in number, occupying one small room as a sleeping apartment.

That the effect of breathing vitiated air is bad goes without saying and is manifest in many ways, retarding the mental, moral and physical development, all of which are conditions most potent in causing degeneracy and criminality. This evil strikes at the very root of civic life, and merits much more attention than is given by the city fathers.

Its social and economic importance, if properly considered, greatly outweighs the garbage question, yet aside from a superficial observance of the general rules for the ventilation of schools and buildings where great numbers congregate, no effort is made to educate the masses to a proper realization of the dangers of overcrowding and improper ventilation.

At the second annual meeting of the Arkansas State Homeopathic Medical Association held in Little Rock, on April 12th, the following officers were elected:

PURE-FOOD INSPECTION LAW.

Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, under whom, as chief of the Bureau of Chemistry, of the Department of Agriculture, the inspection of all foods and wines imported into the United States must pass, recently reported as a result of such inspection that twenty samples, or about 10 per cent. of two hundred and five invoices examined had been condemned.

Of these twenty samples five were of Rhine wine, and contained salicylic acid; two of white wine, Sauterne, and contained sulphurous acid; four of olive oil, containing cottonseed oil, and misbranded; three of frankfurter sausage, containing harmful preservatives; four of vegetables in cans, with lead tops touching the food; one of vinegar, misbranded and made from distilled alcohol, and one of coloring matter for foods, in which coaltar dyes were used.

In view of the rigid methods of examination adopted under the new law, which condemns and excludes impure and misbranded foods and wines, it is pleasant to announce that Mariani's wine is found by careful analysis to be absolutely pure. Thus an additional recognition of merit is accorded this reliable preparation by an official endorsement of the United States Government. This excellent provision against the introduction of impure and adulterated foods is in conformity with similar stringent food laws operative in France, Germany, Russia and elsewhere abroad.-The Coca Leaf, November, 1903.

OBITUARY.

As we go to press, we record the sad news of the death of our beloved preceptor and long-time friend, Dr. Solon Robinson Boynton of Sparta, Ill., who after a long and useful career, departed this life on Saturday, May 14, 1904. A more extended notice regarding the deceased will appear in the June issue of THE CLINICAL REPORTER.

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE PROFESSION:

It is our privilege and pleasure to once more sound the "Assembly” call for the coming together of our hosts of Homeopathy in national convention. We feel convinced that the program to be offered at the Sixtieth Annual Session of the American Institute of Homeopathy, to be held at Niagara Falls from the 20th to the 25th of June, will be, if not the finest, yet in the foremost rank of the finest, the most living, the most helpful program ever offered at a meeting of our national Society.

Among other things it is proposed to take up the all-important subject of the reproving of our Materia Medica on the lines of the latest scientific research; possibly to discuss the feasibility of establishing an Institute of Drug Proving, and to judicially consider the subject of posology.

The place of meeting is known the world over for the magnificence of its natural attractions. It is centrally located and easily and comfortably reached; and as no American can afford to be ignorant of Niagara, our members may well rejoice in this opportunity to know the wonderful and historic old place at a less expense and under happier circumstances than may be again possible for an indefinite time. Proverbially, a "City of Hotels," the accommodations will be ample for all who may choose to The railroad fare will be the usual one and one-third for the round trip on the certificate plan.

THE PAIN IN RHEUMATIC GOUT.

Chas. P. Heil, M. D., late Professor of Anatomy, Indiana College of Medicine, Indianapolis, Ind., in the Mobile Medical and Surgical Journal, states: "Many of the cases of rheumatic gout which I have treated were of an obstinate and complicated character and I must state that I myself have been suffering with an attack in the nature of a very severe inflammatory condition, situated in and over the articulations of my wrist, knee and ankle joints. The pain which I suffered most of the time was indescribable. I placed myself under the care of a physician, who, upon examination, pronounced me also slightly affected with cardiac trouble. I suffered the most excruciating pain for ten days and nights, without alleviation of my sufferings, nor apparent signs of progress for the better. Knowing full well the efficiency and value of Antikamnia Tablets in these cases, I took two tablets and about ten minutes after taking them the pain was relieved, I perspired slightly and than fell into a gentle sleep. The result was simply magical. I slept eight hours in perfect rest, free from all pain. I continued the two tablets every four hours during my convalescence and until complete recovery."
