SCOTLAND NEW S.

Edinburgh, Dec. 30.

HE Brothers, of Glasgow, Capt. John Anderfon, arrived in Clyde on Tuef day last, in fix Weeks, from Virginia. By her we learn, that after the Defeat of Major Grant, near Fort du Qu fne, the French Blushed with their Succefs, fent a Detachment of 700 Men to ha rafs the Country, and particularly to cut off a Body of 400 English, who were carrying a large Convoy of black Cattle to the Army under General Forbes. About Mid day the French difcoverered the Convoy; upon which the Englith drew up in a Body, and fent immediate Advice to a large Detachment from the

Main Body, which was then within a few Miles of them. As foon as the French attacked, our People retreated, and managed Affairs fo well, as to decoy the whole Body of the French into the Midft of the Detachment, who, by this Time, having laid themfelves in Ambush in the Thickets, made their Attack fo properly, that 500 of the French were killed upon the Spot, and the other 203, most of whom were wounded, were taken Prifoners, and conducted to the Army. The whole of the Cattle were faved, and the Lofs of Men on our Side was very inconfiderable.

Extract of a Letter from the Hague, dated Jan. 16.

On Friday the 12th Inftant, late at Night, died here greatly lamented, her Royal Highnefs Anne Princefs Royal of England, Princefs Dowager of Orange and Naffau, and Governante of the United Provinces, in the Minority of the prefent Stadtholder, aged 49 Years, 2 Months and 10 Days. The 2th of March, 1734, he was married to William-Charles Henry- Frifo, Prince of Orange and Naffau, by whom he had two Children, Prince William, HereditaryStadtholder of the United Provinces, born the 8th of March, 1748, and Prince's Carolina, born the 28th of February, 1743.

Her Royal Highness, not long before her Deceafe, fent for the Prince and Princess her Children, and after telling them that her Hour was come, and recommending them to the Protection of the Almighty, took her Leave of them in a most tender and affecting Manner.

The Day after her Deceafe her Will was opened, by which her Royal Highness has appointed the King of Great Britain, her Father, and the Irincefs Dowager of Orange and Naffau, Mother of the late Prince her Husband, to be honorary Tutor and Tutorefs of her Children, and the Veldt Marshal Duke of Brunfwick-Wolffenbuttel acting Tutor and Administrator of the Effects of the Houfe of Orange during the Minority of the Prince; and in that Quality his Serene Highness has already taken the Oaths before the Affembly of the States of Holland.

The States of Holland were extraordi

narily affembled, and, upon the Notification of this Event being made to them, they proceeded to confirm the Regulations that had been made for the Minority of the Stadtholder; and his Highness Prince Lewis of Brunfwick was invited to assist in the Affembly of Holland, where he was received and feated with all the Refpect poffible, and took the Oaths, as reprefenting the Captain General of the Union. After which his Highness communicated to the Affembly the Act of her Royal Highness, by which he was appointed Guardian of her Children; and that in Confequence of it, he had taken Care of their Perfons, and would provide for every Thing belonging to them. Ceremony being over, Prince Lewis was likewife invited to the Affembly of the StatesGeneral. A Refolution was prepared and taken by their High Mightineffes, whereby

This

they

they acknowledged and agreed to the RefoJution of Holland, relative to Prince Lewis's reprefenting the Captain General. Every Thing paffed with great Order and Tranquility, and to the Satisfaction of the People.

In the Evening, the different Colleges of the Government made formal Deputations to the Prince of Orange and Princess CaroJine, who were affifted by Prince Lewis as their Guardian and Reprefentative, and who answered in their Prefence for both of them.

Her Royal Highnefs the Princefs Gouvernante wrote a Letter to the States General a few Days before her Death, to defire them to honour with their Approbation the Marriage of the Princefs Caroline with the Prince of Naffau-Weilbourg.

This Letter alfo mentioned, that as the Prince of Naffau-Weilbourg was not of the eftablished Religion (that is a Lutheran, not a Calvinift) that it should be ftipulated in the Contract of Marriage, that all the Children born of that Marriage, fhould be Baptifed and Educated in the established Religion of Holland."

From the LONDON GAZETTE. Whitehall, Jan. 20. Yesterday a Mail arrived from New York, which brings an Account of the Succefs of his Majefty's Arms on the River Ohio; and the following Extract of a Letter from Brigadier-General Forbes to the Commander in Chief of his Majefty's Forces in North America, dated Fort Du Quefne, November the 26th and 30th, contains the only Particulars as yet Teceived of that important Event.

I have the Pleasure of acquainting you with the fignal Succefs of his Majefty's Arms over all his Enemies on the Ohio, by having obliged them to burn their Fort Du Quefne, which they effectuated upon the 24th inft. and of which I took Poffeffion with my light Troops the fame Evening, and with my little Army the next Day. The Enemy made their Escape down the River, Part in Boats, and Part by Land, to their Forts and Settlements on the Miffiffipi, having been abandoned, or, at leaft, not seconded, by their Friends the Indians, whom we previously engaged to act a neutral Part, after thoroughly convincing them, in feveral Skirmishes, that all their Attempts upon our advanced Pofts, in order to cut off our Communication, were vain, and to no Pur. pofe; fo they now feem all willing, and well difpofed to embrace his Majesty's Protection.

Give me Leave, therefore, to congratulate you upon this important Event, of

having expelled the French from Fort Du Quefne, and this prodigious Tract of fine rich Country; and of having, in a Manner, reconciled the various Tribes, and Nations of Indians, inhabiting it, to his Majesty's Government.

So far I had wrote you the 26th, but being feized with an Inflammation in my Stomach, and Liver, the sharpest and most fevere of all Diftempers, I could proceed no farther; and, as I have a Thousand Things to fay, have ordered Major Halkett down the Country, in order to explain the Motives upon which I proceeded, and the various, and almost infurmountable Difficulties I had to grapple with.

I fhall leave this as foon as I am able to ftand; but God knows, when, or if eI reach Philadelphia.

ver,

here To-morrow, when I hope very foon to I expect the Heads of all the Indians in finish with them.'
