SIR: In obedience to the requirements of the eleventh section of the act of August 26, 1842, 1 have the honor to transmit herewith lists of the clerks and other persons employed in this department and its bureaus during the last year, or any part thereof, showing the time employed, and the amount paid to each.

These officers have all been usefully employed, and the services of none of them can be dispensed with without detriment to the public service, and I am not aware that the removal of any of them and the appointment of others in their stead at present is required for the better despatch of busi

ness.

SIR: I have the honor herewith, in accordance with the eleventh section of "An act legalizing and making appropriations for such necessary objects as have been usually included in the general appropriation bills without authority of law," &c., approved August 26, 1842, to transmit duplicate lists of clerks and other persons employed during the year 1851, or any part thereof, in this office, the time they were employed, the amount paid to each, and the place of his residence at the time of appointment.

With regard to the other requirements of the section referred to, I have to state that the clerks of this office have generally been usefully employed; that the services of the present number are indispensable, and that the removal of no individual is at this time required for the better despatch of business.
