A SYLLABUS OF MATERIA MEDICA. Compiled by Warren Coleman, M. D., Professor of Clinical Medicine and Instructor in Materia Medica and Therapeutics in Cornell University Medical College, etc. Second edition. Cloth, 189 pages. New York, William Wood & Co.

This book, although devoted to allopathic materia medica, contains much that is of interest and value to homeopathic physicians, such as groupings of drugs which may produce eruptions, of drugs excreted in the milk, of drugs which color the feces and urine or cause the urine to respond to tests for sugar.

THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. By H. V. Halbert, M. D., Senior Professor of Clinical Medicine in Hahnemann Medical College; Attending Physician to Cook County Hospital, Chicago. 1110 pages. Cloth, $5.00; Sheep, $6.00. P. H. Mallen Company, Chicago.

We have looked for Dr. Halbert's book on practice with a great deal of interest and after a critical examination of it we heartily recommend it to the homeopathic profession. There will undoubtedly be some in our school who will criticise the author for recommending methods of treatment which are not homeopathic but in our estimation it would be better for Homeopathy if all teachers were as honest as Dr. Halbert. Throughout the entire work there is evidence of painstaking application of the homeopathic principle of therapeutics but there is also a rational presentation of modern therapeutics. The only fault we have to find with the book is the failure on the part of the author and publisher to illustrate it, a fault which we trust will be corrected in future editions.

DISORDERS OF METABOLISM AND NUTRITION. PART VII. Diabetes Mellitus: A special course of lectures delivered in the University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York. By Professor Dr. Carl von Noorden, Physician-in-Chief to the City Hospital, Frankfort-on-Main. Authorized American edition translated under the direction of Boardman Reed, M. D. 212 pages. Cloth, $1.50. E. B. Treat & Co., New York.

We repeat what we have said before regarding this series of monographs upon nutritional disorders, they should be studied by every physician. The profession is fortunate in so soon having at their disposal in the present volume the lectures recently given by Dr. von Noorden at Bellevue Hospital Medical College. Diabetes is a disease which every physician meets and in many cases is improperly treated. A careful study of the above monograph will aid in a better understanding of these cases.

A TEXT-BOOK OF DISEASES OF WOMEN. By Barton Cooke Hirst, M. D., Professor of Obstetrics, University of Pennsylvania. Second edition, revised and enlarged. Octavo of 741 pages, with 701 original illustrations, many in colors. Philadelphia and London: W. B. Saunders & Company, 1905. Cloth, $5.00 net; Sheep or Half Morocco, $6.00 net.

In the second edition of this work, there has been a most thorough revision, introducing, however only such matter as promises to be of permanent value. There are many changes in illustrations, the work now containing over 700, many of which are in colors. The work is a companion volume to the author's "Text Book of Obstetrics" and is written in the same concise and practical style. We take pleasure in recommending it to the medical profession generally.

Surgical pathology is a subject which should appeal to every physician, whether he is a surgeon or not. A thorough comprehension of its principles will meet with practical application in every day practice, both in diagnosis and treatment. The great difficulty with the majority of works upon the subject is that they are too comprehensive but in this work we have one in which the author has overcome this objection. It has proved itself to be valuable in college teaching and should be studied by practicing physicians who desire to keep up to date.

THE MEDICAL RECORD VISITING LIST. For 60 patients a week, $1.50: for 30 patients, $1.25. Wm. Wood & Co., New York.

The Medical Record Visiting List needs no commendation to those who are familiar with it. It is made for hard service and has an appearance of elegance not often found in such books.

A MANUAL OF THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. By A. A. Stevens, A. M.. M. D., Professor of Pathology in the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, and Lecturer on Physical Diagnosis at the University of Pennsylvania. Seventh Edition, Revised. 12mo. of 556 pages, illustrated. Philadelphia and London: W. B. Saunders & Company, 1905. Flexible Leather, $2.50 net.
