WILD SCENES IN THE FOREST AND PRAIRIE. By C. HOFFMAN.— Bentley.

NOTES OF THE MONTH.

The Duke of Beaufort and Mr. Horlock.-Much angry and party feeling has prevailed and still prevails in Wilts. and Gloucestershire, respecting a dispute as to the right to hunt certain covers. The letters that have appeared on the subject are needlessly long,—and a sort of personal spirit has crept into, and prevails in them, quite uncalled for, either from the sportsman, the landowner, or the master of hounds. The case appears to lie in a nutshell:-Was the permission, which the late Duke of Beaufort granted to Mr. Horlock, at the solicitation of the latter, to hunt certain covers,-an irrevocable gift, or a grant recallable by his Grace or any subsequent master of the Badminton hounds. We own we do not see how the noble Duke could, consistently with the laws of fox-hunting, have irredeemably alienated the covers of the hunt. Mr. Horlock, however, insists on keeping these disputed covers, which the present Duke reclaims for his hunt. The proper course is for Mr. Horlock,as a gentleman and sportsman, to refer, a course which we are quite sure the Duke of Beaufort, from his known character, would assent to; indeed, we believe on the part of the Badminton hunt, a proposal to leave the matter to arbitration was made. And certainly a judicious address from numerous parties, interested in the adjustment, has been circulated in the disturbed counties. Mr. Horlock will do well temperately to reconsider the matter, and to further a settlement of the dispute by arbitration, a mode which is seldom refused by those who have a good cause, and who are anxious to have a just and peaceable arrangement of differences effected.

Oxfordshire. We have received a letter from a Correspondent near Oxford complaining of a sad habit amongst the gentlemen, who sport their " Emblings"* on a two guinea hunter for the day, or on an eight shilling "Animal for a quite ride" of tracking each other when out with the hounds, and charging the same part of a fence that some hack had just floundered over with its rider. He is very earnest in requesting one young gentleman not to make so dead a point of jumping on another young gentleman, when down. The advice seems reasonable. Our correspondent has appended some rules for Oxford hunting, which, at some future time, we may submit to the jumping gentlemen of the colleges, for their edification and guidance. The Heythrop and the Berkshire hounds are said to have had some good runs during the last six weeks. And it is added that Mr. Laugton resigns the Heythrop-probably into the hands of a Committee.

Peterborough Steeple Match.-The match between Mr. P. Sers' grey horse Pilot, and Mr. Brown's bay horse, Whisker, to run three miles and a half across country, the former to be ridden by Mr. Hunter, and the latter by Mr. W. Wright, came off recently. It is stated to have been a well contested race, and that the horses and riders acquitted themselves with credit, over a strong hunting country, with seventeen rasping fences. At the last fence, a trying one, both charged at the same moment; the grey, from his peculiar mode of jumping, appeared to be quickest upon his legs, and the run in not being two hundred yards, left the bay second best.

We understand that Pilot, during his exercise at Chelthenham last season, took fright on a frosty road, ran-away with the lad, and jumped the spiked palisades of the Priory Parade, four feet nine and a half inches in height! He had two rugs and a saddle on, which brings the feat close upon Irish jumping.

List of Hounds, &c.-We are enabled, through the kindness of a Correspondent, to do that which is our anxious endeavour and desire to do, viz: to render our list of the packs of hounds, with their owners, huntsmen, &c., as correct as possible. Those only who know, as we do, the difficulty of collecting information, sufficient to form a list at all, and who are aware of the continual changes taking place in owners and servants, can or will allow for unavoidable error. The following are corrections.

Gloucestershire-(Lord Seagrave's) for "H. Skinner," (whipper in) read "Tom Hicks."

*The best Oxford breeches maker.

Wiltshire-Mr. Horlock's huntsman (not yet known), but Charles Treadwell has left and gone to Lord Suffield.

Yorkshire-Lord Hawke's (the Badsworth), for W. Foster, read William Butler, (as good a huntsman as any in England).

Nottinghamshire-Mr. Foljambe's for Jos. Thompson," read "William

Merry."

We see by the programme of the Croxton Park Races, that a good meeting is insured. The stewards are the Earl of Wilton, Lord Forester, and the Marquis of Granby; and when we state, that under such patronage, there is a Farmer's Plate of £50. The Scurry Stakes (to which the Duke of Beaufot, Earls of Wilton, and Chesterfield, and Count Bathyany are already subscribers.) The Granby handicap, (with 34 subscribers of the highest caste); a Farmer's handicap of 50 sovs: The Billesden Coplow Stakes (gentlemen riders,) and the Melton Plate of 50 sovs. We have announced a tempting and promising bill of fare. To complete all, Mr. Edward Newbatt is secretary. LEICESTERSHIRE.-THE DUKE OF RUTLAND'S BIRTH-DAY.* Mr. EDITOR,-Since the appearance of your last publication there have been gay doings in the country, particularly in the neighbourhood of the Belvoir Hunt. At the commencement of the month I had the pleasure of hearing that I should have an opportunity of participating in the princely hospitalities which take place annually at Belvoir Castle, on the 4th of January, in honor of the Duke of Rutland's birth-day; and I am happy in being enabled to record that it appeared to be the universal opinion of the yeomanry of the neighbourhood, that there never was a birth-day passed over which gave such entire satisfaction.

I mention yeomary, Mr. Editor, as you may not be aware that although Belvoir is so celebrated for its reception of the first nobles in the land, it is no less remarkable for the privileges afforded to the yeomanry, tradesmen, and peasantry in the neighbourhood; and I am sure, that if you could have only witnessed the free and unostentatious manner in which these classes were allowed to mix in the ball-room with the high and titled personages who were visiting the proproietor of that princely domain, you would have exclaimed with the many, this is as it should be, this is the manner in which the old English customs ought to be kept up, as the best and surest way of livetting the claim of the great upon the affections of all grades below them.

Monday the 7th was the day appointed for holding the annual show of hunting horses of the Waltham Agricultural Society in Croxton Park, when the following prizes were awarded. To Mr. Hallam of Tithby, Notts, for the best four year old hunting horse, by Juniper, dam by Vivaldi, £20, and £5 for being the breeder of the same. To Mr. Morch of Wartnaby near Melton, (second best) £15; To Mr. Chamberlin of Westby, near Grantham, (third best) £10.

Second Class. To Mr. Hallam of Tithby, Notts, for the best three years old hunting horse, by Sir Gilbert, £15; to Mr. Hoe of Long Claxton, for the second best by Hawker, £10.

Third Class. To Mr. Rose of Cotham, for the best brood mare, £20; To Mr. Pindon of Barrowby (second best) £15; To Mr. Adcock of Oakham (third best) £10.

The judges on the occasion were; The Marquis of Granby, Lord Forester, and the Hon. C. S. Wortley; to whom the society are much indebted for the anxiety and interest displayed by them in awarding the premiums, which gave general satisfaction. Notwithstanding the boisterous state of the weather, an immense concourse of people, horse and foot, were brought together. Amongst the distinguished persons present, were-the Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Rutland, Lord Bloomfield, Lord F. Somerset, Lord Burghersh, Lord Howth, Lord C. S. Manners, Lord G. Manners, Sir Robert Peel, Sir F. Trench, Sir Alex. Grant, Sir Jas. Musgrave, Sir David Baird, Hon. Mr. Pierrepont, Hon. W. * We have referred to this interesting festival in a note to the "Notitia Venatica.” but this account from an intelligent yeoman who was present will, we are sure, be pleasant to our readers.-ED.
