PREFACE.

The very favourable reception and encreafing encouragement, afforded the London Review, in its progress through the two volumes already published, have naturally inspired its authors with a proportionable confidence in the candour of the public.

The Reviewers, indeed, are happy to reflect that, in the course of twelve months paff, both their abstracts and extracts have been fortunate enough to give fingular fatisfaction as well to writers as readers; many of the former having been candid enough to communicate equal fatisfaction to the Reviewers, by acknowledging even their chastisement friendly and their cenfures just.

In their first address to the public, the Reviewers were induced to observe, that Anonymous critics are apt to indulge both their petulance and indolence, from the reflection
