PREFACE.

THE labor of placing, in a permanent form, the early proceedings of the Medical Society of the County of Albany, was accomplished by Dr. Sylvester D. Willard, whose efforts to promote the best interests of the medical profession of the county, were indefatigable.

Imperfect as were the early records of the Society, Dr. Willard carefully edited them, publishing in one volume, the proceedings of the Society from its organization to June 10, 1851, together with biographical notices (written by himself) of members who had died, up to the time of the printing of that volume.

Since then the Society has gained a new impetus by the addition of numerous members, and the increased frequency of its meetings. A large mass of material having thus accumulated, it was thought desirable to publish another volume. The work was undertaken by Dr. James S. Bailey, who succeeded in raising, by subscription, the necessary funds for the purpose. At the semi-annual meeting, June 14, 1870, a resolution was adopted, forming a committee to supervise the publication of the proceedings of the
