THE PROTESTANT MAGAZINE. PUBLISHED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE COMMITTEE OF THE Protestant Association. "The Bishop of Rome hath no jurisdiction in this realm of England."-ART.XXXVII. VOLUME XX.-A.D. 1858. LONDON: WERTHEIM, MACINTOSH, AND HUNT, 24, PATERNOSTER-ROW, and 23, HOLLES-STREET, CAVENDISH-SQUARE ; OWEN, LATE VARTY AND OWEN, 31, STRAND; W. CURRY AND CO., DUBLIN ; AND ALL BOOKSELLERS. PROTESTANT MAGAZINE. JANUARY 1, 1858. MR. SPOONER AND MAYNOOTH. A GOOD deal of unpleasant feeling and misapprehension has been occasioned by a paragraph which appeared in a recent number of the "Monthly Letter" issued from the office of the Protestant Alliance. The paragraph to which we refer, numbered 241, is as follows, and occurs in the November Letter: "241. MAYNOOTH.-It is of the greatest importance that the question should be advocated in the House of Commons by a Member able and willing to deal properly with a matter of national importance, and unconnected with political parties. The Committee are carefully considering the subject." The writers clearly seem to be impressed with the idea that, owing to his want of willingness or ability, or to his connexion with party, Mr. Spooner cannot deal properly with a matter of such national importance. If this be so, it would have been better to have allowed the subject to have been discussed in Committee, and arranged VOL. XX. Jan., 1858. |
