And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and shall take away the continual burnt offering, and they shall set up the abomination 32 that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he 'pervert by flatteries: but the people that know their God 33 shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that be wise among the people shall instruct many yet they shall fall by the sword and by flame, 34 by captivity and by spoil, many days. and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for a price. And at the 40 time of the end shall the king of the south 'contend with him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass through. He shall enter 41 also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall be delivered out of his hand, Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. He shall 42 stretch forth his hand also upon the countries : and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But 43 he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. But tidings out of the 44 east and out of the north shall trouble him: and he shall go forth with great fury to destroy and utterly to make away many. And he shall 45 devote many plant the tents of his palace 'between the sea and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him. And 1 12 at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of 2 them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And "they 3 that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and 4

5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on the brink of the river on this side, and the other on the brink 6 of the river on that side. And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was above the waters of the river, How long shall it 7 be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when they have made an end of breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things 8 shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not then said I, O my lord, what shall 9 be the 1issue of these things? And he said, 1Or, latter end Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are shut 10 up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand: but they that be wise shall understand. Or, the II And from the time that the continual burnt offering shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty 13 days. But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and shalt stand in thy lot, at the end of the days.

HOSEA.

1Or, with

2 Heb. visit.

3 That is, That hath not obtained mercy.

THE word of the LORD that came unto Hosea 1 1 the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

When the LORD spake at the first 'by Hosea, 2 the LORD said unto Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredom and children of whoredom : for the land doth commit great whoredom, departing from the LORD. So he went and took 3 Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; and she conceived, and bare him a son. And the LORD 4 said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease. And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will 5 break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel. And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. 6 And the LORD said unto him, Call her name Lo-ruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel, that I should in any wise pardon them. But I will have mercy upon 7 the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen. Now when she had weaned Lo- 8

9 ruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son. And the LORD said, Call his name 'Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be 'your God. 10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass that, in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God. 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint themselves one head, and shall go up from the land: for great shall be the day 21 of Jezreel. Say ye unto your brethren, ‘Ammi; and to your sisters, 'Ruhamah.

mercy.

Plead with your mother, plead; for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: and let her put away her whoredoms from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts; lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and 4 slay her with thirst; yea, upon her children will I have no mercy; for they be children of 5 whoredom. For their mother hath played the harlot she that conceived them hath done. shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink. Heb. 6 Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and I will make a fence against 7 her, that she shall not find her paths. And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for 8 then was it better with me than now. For she did not know that I gave her the corn,
