"In six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is,
"and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed
"it."-Exodus xx. verse 11. "He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not
"be removed for ever." "He covered it with the deep as with a garment: the waters
"stood above the mountains." "Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: thou

“As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he "flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the "place thereof shall know it no more."-Psalm ciii. "But the Lord of "Hosts covereth himself with light as with a garment: and stretcheth "out the heavens like a curtain: He layeth the beams of his chambers "in the waters: He maketh the clouds his chariot, and walketh upon "the wings of the wind."-Psalm civ. "Out of the south cometh "the whirlwind; and cold out of the north." "Also by watering he "wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud: and it is "turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever "he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth." "Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of "his cloud to shine? Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds ?" "-Job xxxvii. "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the "earth ? " "Who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as "if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud the

garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it." "Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea ?" "The waters are "hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen."-Job xxxviii.

No man has ever seen the south, or the north, pole of the earth, and probably never will.

"Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy "footsteps are not known."-Psalm lxxvii. 19.

PREFACE.

As the prevailing geological theory, and the work called the "Vestiges of the Creation," have tended to throw doubts on the veracity of the Mosaic record, and have given rise to most extraordinary notions regarding the origin of the earth, the Author of this little work, with the view of removing these doubts and erroneous impressions, presents the result of his researches, which he trusts will show that there are no reasons whatever why the literal meaning of the first chapter of Genesis should be changed.

In perusing the following pages, the reader will observe that the conclusions are not the mere offspring of closet contemplations-knowledge acquired only from books—or that they are the results of local researches; on the contrary, they are founded on careful and very extensive observations made during many years, in every zone on the globe, from 40° latitude
