Therapeutic Notes.

Of course you have noticed what the Chas. Roome Parmele Co.. has to say about that new laxative Fikulax, on our title page of this issue.

Malto-Yerbine (Maltine with yerba santa) has proved more efficient than any other remedial agent in allaying the otherwise intractable cough which so frequently accompanies an attack of the la grippe.

Dr. Samuel Wolfe, of Philadelphia, in an article says: "A man of 42, in the course of an attack of la grippe, was enduring extreme torture from the pain of a trigeminal neuralgia. The second 10 grain dose of Antikamnla gave such complete and permanent relief, that my patient, a druggist of large experience upbraidingly asked me, 'why didn't you prescribe this remedy before?"

Something to be admired, as well as a thing for practical use, is a paper cutter recenlly sent out to the patrons of Listerine, by the Lambert Pharmical Co., of St. Louis. This is certainly something that will not allow its recipient to forget the great value of Listerine.

In cases where dry scabs or scales form in the nose, I order to give, say a half ounce of Unguenine, make a small mop with a small roll of absorbent cotton on the end of a small stick, roll the mop in the Unguentine and apply well up both nostrils, at the same time have patient to snuff the nose until the Unguentine can be plainly tasted. Use only once a day, just before retiring for the night, This generally cures within three weeks.-Dr. T Pickles, Anna, Ill.

The Dios Chemical Co., St. Louis, Mo., are determined to stop the nefarious business of substituting their two products, Dioviburnin and Neurosine. Physicians recognize the therapeutic value of these products in the class af cases in which they are indicated and whereas this company caters exclusively to the professiou, we believe it is due them that the physicians co-operate in stopping substitution, and if they will report to the Dios Compauy such druggists as attempt substituting their products it will be considered strictly confidential and their name will in no wise be mentioned. We trust the SUMMARY readers will co-operate, not only in protecting the manufacturer, but themselves as well.

Dr. F. A. Rew, Imboden, Ark., says: "My experience with S. H. Kennedy's Extract of Pinus Canadensis was so decidedly satisfactory and gratifying that I prescribed it with a posative assurance that benefit will follow its use. On the principle that "all astringents are tonics," I use the Pinus Canadensis, in small doses, in pneumonia; bronchitis, typhoid fever; indeed, where the mucous membranes need a tonic, and recognizing the similarity between mucous membranes and the external skin, I use it in erysipelas, nervous forms of eczema, and wherever the skin needs a tonic. It is all I need in many cases of ophthalmia and gonorrhea. Its special therapeuties would fill many pages, and I am satisfied that we will yet find new uses for it."

Compound.

Green Root only is used. The menstruum is pure, inodorous spirit, whereby the peculiar, rich aroma and characteristic virtues of the fresh drug are extracted and retained unim. paired. It is a perfect representative of the drug, and to avoid the danger of over doses in some cases, and the uncertainty of attending the use of inert and imperfect remedies in others, Tinct. Gelsemium-Merrell, only should be dispensed. It is an agent of wonderfully active therapeutic power, possessing a well-defined and uniform standard of medicinal strength.

An organic compound of Iron representing in a purified and soluble form the albuminate and salts (phosphates) present in the blood. It contains o 7 per cent. metallic iron in a form that is readily absorbed and highly active.

This combination of Iron may be regarded as approximating the natural forms in which the metal is present in the animal system and possesses a marked value in anæmia and chlorosis neurasthenia where prolonged administration of iron is indicated. It is not only free from any tendency to cause digestive disturbances, but is of positive value in these condi tions during convalescence, etc. One part of this syrup represents about fifteen parts of fresh bullock's blood.

This preparation consists of Carbonol, a perfectly pure and bland medicinal hydro carbon product in combination with Thymol, Eucalyptol, Menthol, Camphor and Oil Gaultheria.

A valuable bland and soothing antiseptic and deodorant, exerting a decidedly beneficial influence on the mucous membranes. Successfully employed as an inhalant in the form of spray in Catarrhal affections of the Nose and Throat.

In this preparation the Chlorides of Aluminum, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium are present with the white alkaloid of Hydrastis. This addition is favored by some physicians, and the solution is somewhat more astringent than our regular Colorless Hydrastis.

Recommended for external use only in Gonorrhoea, Leucorrhoea, Nasal Catarrh and all diseases of the mucous surfaces.

As an injection or wash-One part to four or six of water. As a spray-One part to six or eight of water. As an eye wash-One part to twelve of water. As a cleansing agent for the ear-One part to six of water, to which has been added a few drops of creosote. May be added to water or Glycerine without precipitation.

Merrell Co.'s "Green Drug" Fluid Extracts, Boro-Glyceride, Salts of Hydrastis, Fluid Hydrastis and all other specialties may be obtained of wholesale druggists throughout the United States, at the Home Office at Cincinnati, New York Office, 96 Maiden Lane, New York City, or San Francisco Office, 45 Stevenson St., San Francisco, Cal.

Therapeutic Notes.

Dr. A. P. Dalrymple, of New York City, says: "I have used Peacock's Chionia and find it very effective. I shall continue to prescribe it in my practice."

Dr. C. B. Mathews, cf Kent, Ind., writes: "I take great pleasure in offering my testimony to the great value of Cactina Pillets, in cases of weak and irregular action of the heart. I have used them for four years and have naver been disappointed in them. They not only stimulate the heart, but improve that organ permanently. I find them very useful in all cases of typhoid fever and pneumonia."

The twenty-first volume of the SUMMARY commences with next issue. Now is a good time to subscribe.

The importance of an absolutely sterile food for the baby has been repeatedly urged by eminent authorities for some time past, and while this is possible to be attained with cow's milk, yet it is rarely that we have found absolute sterilization of commercial infant foods. In a paper by Dr. O. W. Krueger, entitled "Sterilization of Infant Foods," read before the recent meeting of the American Pharmaceutical Association, he states that after testing eight different samples of Eskay's Albumenized Food, purchased in the open market, every sample was found to be sterile.

The successful treatment of la grippe depends upon the thoroughness of tne remedy employed, hence we ask why temporize with other unsatisfactory measures, when Tongaline always secures prompt and efficient as well as permanent results. The internal use of Tongaline Liquid taken at short intervals in hot water, washed down with copious draughts of hot water, may be supplemented by its local application to the inner parts of the thighs and to the abdominal surfaces. Or as la grippe invariably renders the stomach irritable and the nerves sensitive, the disturbing effects of internal medication can be entirely avoided by the external use of Tongaline Liquid alone. In fact when the system is thoroughly under the influence of Tongaline, the progress of the grippe is arrested and as a result there is immediate recuperation, followed shortly by a perfect cure.

Dr. L. S. Hanley, of Buffalo, N. Y. late Surgeon io Emergency and Sisters' Hospitals, etc., reports the following case: "Earl H., boy, Oct. 13, scrofulous makeup, Jan. 15, 1895, fell into tub of boiling water, both legs badly scalded; skin and subcutaneous tissue wholly destroyed. Dressed antiseptically, and after sloughing had been completed, skin grafts tried-no effect. Glands in neck and groin greatly enlarged. Feb. 14, given McArthur's Syr. Hypophos. Comp. and can say that boy's health has greatly improved; has gained in weight; glands have reduced. On March 17, when grafting was again tried, skin grew well, and to-day, April 20, there is only one spot about the size of a silver dollar on the outer and middle third of leg, which will soon be covered. Evidently this case needed the lime and soda that were given him, and I shall continue to use it when occasion demands. Certainly, one swallow does not make a summer,' but it is pleasing to see_that_one_in_season."
