The present list, the tenth of the Library's bibliographical publications, is intended to call attention to an important class of books, the titles of which are scattered through the public card catalogue, and therefore are not readily available there. The scope of the list is almost exactly that of the Library. It includes the social, physical, natural, and medical sciences, but omits the applied sciences; material for a list of books on the history of arts and industries is being collected and prepared for publication in a separate volume. Publications on the history of learned institutions have not been included in the present list, and only such biographies as have a direct bearing on the, position of their subjects in the history of science, particularly such as have founded a given branch of science, or have made the chief contributions to it. Material for lists of the Library's resources in these two fields is in readiness for publication, should occasion arise. The amount of material under the medical sciences is due to the acquisition by this Library of the books belonging to the Medical Department of the Newberry Library, which included the old medical reference collection of the Chicago Public Library, the library of the Medical Library Association of Chicago, and the Senn collection; especially is the last named rich in historical works, coming largely from the library of the late Professor W. Baum of Göttingen. The large number of titles under philosophy, on the other ... ay be ascribed to the fact that so much current philosophical writing is historical in form.

The titles are, in the main, grouped according to the system used in the public card catalogue, except that chronological sub-divisions have been adopted in order to bring together material relating to the history of special periods: the titles themselves are arranged alphabetically within each group, as a chronological sub-arrangement did not seem to serve any particular purpose in this case, whereas the alphabetical arrangement brings together related works by the same author and different editions of the same work.

The present list includes material on the history of sciences: it does not include material on the history of movements, or of activities: for instance, under 370.9 no histories of educational practice are to be found, but, as the title of this group indicates, only histories of pedagogy; under 335.09 no histories of socialistic movements, only works that deal with the development of socialistic theories; under 309, only the history of sociology, while the public card catalogue includes here social history. as well; under 330.9 only works on the history of economics, and not those on economic history. A large number of the titles included do not have entry under sub-divisions for the history of the topic in the various. sections and divisions of the card catalogue, for the reason that they deal with subjects having no such sub-division. The collecting of material
