And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave

clothes. Jesus saith

Jesus saith unto them,

Loose him, and let him go.

LESSON XVI. QUESTIONS.

How did Jesus Christ shew how much

he loved Lazarus?

When they had taken away the stone from the entrance to the tomb, what did Jesus Christ say?

What did he say when he called to Lazarus to come out of the tomb?

Did the dead man arise at the word of Jesus Christ?

Does not this shew that Jesus Christ had

power to save men from eternal death?

LESSON XVII.

AT the same time that Jesus Christ performed these miracles, he taught men what they ought to do to please God.

The following are some of Jesus Christ's sayings, taken from his Sermon on the Mount.

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and he taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit:1 for their's is the kingdom of heaven.

NOTE.

The poor in spirit are the humble and

submissive.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

If ye forgive men their trespasses,3 your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

NOTES.

2 Peacemakers are they who endeavour to make men friendly to each other. There are many wicked people who like to see others quarrel.

3 Trespasses are offences, sins.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

LESSON XVII. QUESTIONS.

WHAT did our Saviour say in the Sermon on the Mount about the poor in spirit?

the merciful?

the peacemakers?

Who are the poor in spirit?

What must we do, or God will not forgive us

our trespasses?

Will every one that calls Jesus Christ, Lord, Lord, enter into the kingdom of heaven? What must we do besides?

Why was this discourse called the Sermon on the Mount?
