LESSON XXIX.

JESUS Christ fulfilled his promise to send the Comforter, a few days after his Ascension, and on a festival called Pentecost.

From the 2d Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.

When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they (that is, the Apostles) were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost."

1

NOTE.

The Apostles were enabled by the Holy Ghost to do many wonderful works, to speak languages they did not know before, and to teach the Religion of Jesus Christ without making any mistakes.

In the New Testament there are several

Letters, or Epistles, which the Apostles wrote to Christians in different parts of the world. In our next and last Lesson we will read what the Apostles wrote in these Epistles, about the Holy Ghost being given to all Christians.

LESSON XXIX. QUESTIONS.

WHAT was the Comforter promised by Jesus Christ?

On what festival was the Comforter sent? Was it long after Jesus Christ's Ascension?

What did the Apostles hear and see on the festival of Pentecost?

What did God enable them to do by the Holy Ghost?

What are the Epistles?

LESSON XXX.

From the 6th Chapter of the 1st Epistle to the Corinthians.

1

KNOW ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God?

NOTE.

1God is present every where, but he shewed his presence in his Temple, as you will read in the Old Testament. God was therefore said to inhabit, or dwell in, his Temple. And Christians are called the temple of the Holy Ghost, because the Holy Ghost dwells in them.

From the 2d Chapter of the Epistle to the

Philippians.

Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do.

NOTE.

2 This shews what God does through the Holy Ghost which dwells in Christians. He works in them to will, when he disposes them to perform their duty. He works in them to do, when he enables them to perform it. For a man might wish to be good, and yet not be able to be so.

Because God worketh in Christians by his Spirit, they are bound to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling: otherwise God's assistance will only add to their guilt.
