Rapid Remedy for Hoarseness.

Gastric Irritability.-"I have used with flattering results 'Colden's Liquid Beef Tonic,' as a food in a variety of cases

Cardiac Neuroses.-Cyanide of zinc has been found to produce valuable results in cardiac cases, more particularly in cardiac neuroses, in which it is stated-notably in cases of Gastric Irritability, to act quickly and certainly. Pain in the region of the heart, palpitation, and want of rhythm, are quickly relieved, and, in some cases, cured. It is given in doses of one-tenth to one-eighth of a grain, three times a day.

Peptogenic Milk Powder.-Fairchild Bros. & Foster, 82 Fulton St., New York, have a large and increasing demand for their Peptogenic Milk Powder. Write for samples. See front page cover.

Cure for Warts.-Take fifteen grains of corrosive sublimate and dissolve it in one ounce of collodion. Brush the warts carefully once a day with this solution. This remedy is more efficacious and convenient than other recommended procedures.

Hemorrhoids.-Piles,rectal ulcers, etc., can be treated after the most approved and scientific method by the use of Aloe's Improved Rectal Instruments. Send 20 cents to A. S. Aloe & Co., St. Louis, for their illustrated pamphlet. See ad. page 10.

Impure Water.-If a tumblerful of water turns to a brown color an hour after the addition of six drops of a saturated solution of permanganate of potash, that water is unfit for drinking purposes.

Office Calendar.-The McArthur Hypophosphite Co., Boston, Mass., have a very pretty Office Calendar for 1888, which they will send to physicians without charge, upon application. Read ad. page 34.

Gonorrheal Pain.-Dr. Fenwick recommends eight-grain doses of salicylate of sodium for pain following an attack of gonorrhea and acidity of the urine.

Neuralgia.-Dr. J. M. Abbott, Richland, Fla., reports a case of neuralgia which had resisted other treatment, as having been cured by the use of Tongaline. See ad. page 23.

Catarrh.-Carbolic acid and alcohol each ten parts, aqua ammonia twelve parts, and Listerine twenty parts. A twoounce wide-mouthed bottle is filled onethird with this mixture, and enough absorbent cotton introduced to absorb the whole. The bottle is then corked, and is ready for use by inhalation.

Dietetic Notes.-Realizing that in many of the diseases in which Lithiated Hydrangea has been found to possess great therapeutic value, it is of the highest importance that suitable diet be employed. The Lambert Pharmacal Company have had prepared for the convenience of physicians, Dietetic Notes, suggesting the articles of food to be allowed or prohibited in several of these diseases. A neatly bound book of these Dietetic Notes, each note perforated for the convenience of physicians in detaching and distributing to their patients, will be sent free of cost, by addressing Lambert Pharmacal Co., 314 N. A Sign of Constitutional Weakness. Dr. E. Duponchel calls attention to the existence of a depressed apex-beat as a valuable sign indicative of constitutional weakness. He calls attention to the sign especially as an aid to those who are called upon to examine recruits for the army.

Substitute for Morphia.-Dr. Chas. H. Merz, House Physician to University Hospital, Cleveland, O., has tried PAPINE (Battle & Co.) both in hospital and private practice, and finds it a most agreeable substitute for morphia and opium. He regards it as the anodyne par excellence. See ad. page 25.

Renal Colic.-Dr. Crittenden states 1 that ammonium biborate is of great value in the prevention of renal colic. He gives at the outset of renal colic scruple doses until free passage of urine results.

Salol.-W. H. Schieffelin & Co., 170 William St., New York, have published a treatise on the therapeutic properties of SALOL, which will be mailed free to physicians making application to them. See ad. page 1.

Eczema.-Dr. Harmer Smith reports an interesting case of eczema with violent itching, which was cured by one-quarter grain of chloral hydrate given every four hours.

Irritable Bladder.-Prof. Bartholow says gelsemium will often do more good in irritable bladder than any other remedy. It is especially adapted to those women of hysterical type troubled by irritability at the neck of the bladder calling for constant urination.

Prevents Miscarriage.-Aletris Cordial (Rio Chemical Co.) is a most valuable preparation. I have at present a patient who miscarried at about six months in two successive pregnancies. She has now been taking Aletris Cordial three months, and has advanced to the seventh month with no indication of miscarriage.-J. Stephenson, M. D., Searsport, Me. Read ad. page 18.

Sore Throat.-Prof. Atkinson claims that for sore throat, chlorate of sodium is preferable to chlorate of potassium, for the following reasons: It dissolves more easily, acts more quickly, is more easily thrown off the system, and it does not affect the kidneys.

Menopause.-Dr. Ella C. Moore, Coldwater, Mich., says she has used Celerina extensively, and that she is very much pleased with its action in the debility and nervousness of females. She finds it of especial value in giving relief during the menopause.

Priapism.-Several cases of priapism have been reported lately where all the ordinary forms of treatment failed to give relief, but the administration of large doses of iodide of potassium caused the gradual disappearance of the affection.

Melancholia.-Dr. R. G. Allen, Washington, Ill., says: All physicians, in a diversified practice, come across cases that prove rebellious to almost all treatment, and none more so than a debilitated, wornout young mother, who, from the cares of home and children, becomes peevish, and often expresses a wish to die rather than suffer the ills of life. In all such cases, Peacock's Bromides, if taken as directed, soon dissipates such melancholy feelings, and restores the patient to health, cheerfulness and happiness. See ad. page 20.

Pruritus Ani or Vulvæ.-For itching of the anus or vulva, an ointment of cocaine hydrochlorate fifteen grains, lanolin one ounce, has been prescribed with good results.

Upjohn Pills and Granules.-Every physician who dispenses any of his own medicines ought to take advantage of the liberal offer of The Upjohn Pill and Granule Co. Their filled pocket-case is worth much more than the price asked, and the goods illustrate the most recent great improvement in pill-making. The universal prediction is, that they will soon exterminate mass pills from the market. See ad. page 4.

Earache.-The severe pain of an earache may often be stopped by a drop or two of a four per cent solution of cocaine muriate.

Lime Juice and Pepsin.-Dr. W. S. Ross, Madisonville, Ky., says that he has used Robinson's "LIME JUICE AND PEPSIN" very extensively, and thinks that it is superior to anything in the way of pepsin. Write to R. A. Robinson & Co., Louisville, Ky., for samples. See ad. page 6.

Diarrhea. The addition of minim or two-minim doses of carbolic acid to ordinary diarrhea-mixtures is also of great service in effecting rapid cures of this very prevalent complaint.

Fluid Hydrastis (Merrell) will continue to be sold at the old price, regardless of the scarcity and high price of the drug. It is needless to add that the high standard of quality will be maintained. Fluid Hydrastis, the great tonic and corrector of the mucous surfaces, has become a power for good in the hands of the intelligent practitioner. See ad. page 19.

Diseases of the Male Urethra.-For a treatise upon the diseases of the male urethra, and their treatment by means of the ANTROPHOR, send to Geo. Morlot, 96 Spring St., New York. This invention of Dr. Paul Francke, of Chemnitz, Saxony, is for conveying medicaments to parts where application had formerly been difficult or impossible. See ad. page 26.

Three Hundred and Eighteen Cases of Diphtheria with but Four Deaths.Bree announces the highly gratifying result of having cured three hundred and fourteen cases of diphtheria out of three hundred and eighteen. His treatment consisted in giving a solution of cyanide of mercury( grain in 2 drachms of diluted alcohol) at first 2 to 3 drops every fifteen minutes, decreasing the dose gradually. The drug decreases the deposit and difficulties of deglutition, raises the force but diminishes the frequency of the pulse, and causes a general improvement of the system.

Edema of the Lungs.-Dr. O'Hanlan, of the Gouverner Hospital, reports a case of oedema of the lungs which was relieved by turning the patient flat on the chest with the head hanging down. The serum flowed from the mouth and nose, and the breathing was promptly relieved.

Oxygen Treatment.-The Wallian Oxygen Apparatus Mnfg. Co., of 119 East 28th St., New York, have invented and are manufacturing a low-priced, portable apparatus for generating and inhaling oxygen gas, suitable either for city or country practice. Send to them for Dr. Wallian's papers on the subject of oxygen treatment, and price lists. See ad, page 33.

Phlegmonous Erysipelas.-Dr.Bundy reports the successful use of a twenty per cent. ointment of resorcin in lanoline, in four aggravated cases of phlegmonous erysipelas, arising from injuries to the hand.

Electricity. For a book of over 100 pages, entitled "Researches in ElectroAlotropic Physiology; Uses of Different Qualities of Electricity to Cure Disease." By Jerome Kidder, M. Ringworm. The following application has been found very serviceable: Hyposulphite of sodium one drachm, dissolved in a pint of distilled water, to which is added one drachm of hydrochloric acid, to make a lotion.

J. G. Milne & Co.. of 59 Dey St., New York, have the greatest confidence in the merits of their Comp. Hypophosphites, and are anxious that all physicians engaged in active practice should give it a trial. To this end, they are willing to send a free pound-bottle of their Hypophosphites to any practicing physician willing to pay express charges. See ad. page 14.

Capsicum.-Gastralgia, enteralgia and flatulent colic may be readily relieved by a few five-minim doses of the tincture. Capsicum is effective in the treatment of flatulent dyspepsia, hysterical flatulence, and the tympanites of typhoid fever. It is also valuable in the latter disease, and in typhus and other low forms of fever as a general nervous and cardiac stimulant. It is one of the most potent remedies that we possess for cholera morbus, cholera infantum and Asiatic cholera.

Old Sore Legs.-For "old sore legs" a a most welcome application is iodoform ointment, with tannin if needed. The elastic bandage aids by giving support to the weak, newly-formed tissue.

Reliable Thermometers.-Send $1.25 to John Barry, 62 Fulton St., New York, and he will send one of his reliable thermometers, post-paid. He has a new thermometer for taking the temperature under the tongue. See ad. page 30.

Acid Phosphate.-Horsford's is the genuine. Write to "Rumford Chemical Works," Providence, R. I., for sample. See ad. page 16.

Cure of Diphtheria in Forty-eight Hours.-Dr. Mercier claims to cure diphtheria in forty-eight hours. His remedy is hydrate of chloral in the form of the syrup of the French Pharmacopoeia, consisting of the proportions 1 to 20. He begins the treatment with administering a dose of ipecac. to produce emesis, avoiding, however, prostration. After cessation of the vomiting, he administers to the patient to 1 drachms of the syrup of hydrate of chloral, according to the age, every half-hour.

California Laurel.-Mann and Hammond state that the preparations of this therapeutic agent have proved of great efficacy in cerebro-spinal meningitis, rheumatism, atonic diarrhea and bilious colic. Mann recites a case of cerebro-spinal meningitis which was cured by an embrocation of the fresh leaves bruised applied to the spine, while an infusion was administered internally. A fluid extract made from the fresh leaves with strong alcohol represents all the remedial virtues of the drug, and can be given in doses of ten to thirty drops, or applied externally.

Uniformity of Strength.-The question of uniformity and precision in the strength of a preparation prescribed, is keeping pace with the additions which are lately being rapidly made in the science of administering medicine in the correct amount to bring about a desired physiological result, and the efforts made by manufacturing chemists and pharmacists to exact knowledge, are meeting with a recognition which will tend to give the art a new and much needed impetus.

Iron for Excessive Menstruation.Dr. Davenport says: I have alluded to iron in speaking of atony of the uterus, and have found it of great value in young women whose only complaint is excessive menstruation, and in that rare class of cases, chlorosis with menorrhagia. The tonic effect of the iron seems to be all they need.

Improved Rectal Speculum.-Write to Dr. S. T. Yount, Lafayette, Ind., for his improved rectal speculum. See ad. page 22.

Ozone for Bedrooms.-A simple plan for obtaining ozone in small quantities is to mix very gradually three parts of strong sulphuric acid with two parts of permanganate of potash in a jam-pot, and place the vessel under the bed. Ozone will be given off from the mixture for some weeks.

Gout.-Treatment.-Dr. Mortimer Granville says: Let iodine in the form of tincture be given, combined with glycerine, and well diluted with water. The effect of this is to cause a very free secretion of acid urine, and elimination of a large amount of uric acid. It is not necessary to use colchicum or alkalies, and it is not advisable to cut down and reduce the diet in elderly and feeble persons. The rationale of this treatment is the separation of uric acid from its bases.
