This book is an early and extremely thorough take on the medical cause of Christ's death. The author put together his own harmony of the Gospel narrative of Jesus' death, studied the original text, compared Scripture with Scripture, and cites accounts of rare medical issues mentioned in the Gospel narrative, which, though well known to educated Western Christians today, were not as well known in the mid-19th century to my understanding. (Sweaty blood, ruptured heart.)
I think the author gives about 500 citations in this book. It could be taken as his life work. However, if you don't have time for the book, I implore you at least to read the fascinating and brief foreword given by James Y. Simpson, famous discoverer of chloroform and a devout believer. This foreword could be taken as a summary of the book itself.
