EXTRACTS FROM A SERMON BY MR. HULL.

A SIGHT of Christ, who is "the Chiefest among ten thousand" to those that know His preciousness, excludes the love of all carnal sights; therefore, those whose affections are set upon Him can never, as before, be charmed with a view of carnal things. We may be ensnared thereby, for every child of God has two parts that which is natural, and that which is spiritual. That which is spiritual has no charms for that which is natural, neither has that which is natural any charms for that which is spiritual. "The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary the one to the other, so that we cannot do the things that we would." But one thing is certainthat grace will have the rule; it will carry the sway. It is impossible that that new Spirit God gives His people can feed upon carnal things, for the heart-desires of a child of God can only be satisfied by God Himself. I am not afraid of the Spirit becoming flesh, but I often wish that my flesh was not contrary to the Spirit, and that it might not move otherwise than as dictated by the Spirit. If I could have perfection in the flesh, I would; but God does not accord it to His people here below. Nevertheless, the time shall come when the Canaanite shall no more dwell in the land.

God's people shall put off this corruptible body, and, at the resurrection, a blessed change shall take place. Christ will then fashion it "like unto His glorious body," for we are predestinated to be conformed unto His image. How many people hate the doctrine of predestination; but I love it. Men may call it a dangerous doctrine; but I can see there is something safe, sure, and blessed in it, for by it the children of God are all destined to be like their Lord. The Apostle says, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." I am sure, if you have ever seen Christ by faith, you will desire to be like Him, and the prospect of it will gladden your heart; but rising fears concerning your hope will make you feel miserable lest you should fall short of the prize.

When John was in Patmos for the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ, he was there an exile, but he was not forsaken of his God. He had a Companion in his tribulation, and a blessed one too. John was a companion to the saints in tribulation, and Christ was a Companion to His servant in his. No. 68, NEW SERIES, AUGUST, 1884.
