CONSUMPTION

AND ALL LUNG DISEASES.

By G. T. CONGREVE, Coombe Lodge, Peckham,

The Nature, Progress, and True Treatment of this Scourge of England, with 133 Selected Cases.

The following Cases are from the TWELFTH SERIES, now commencing:

CONSUMPTION.-CASE of Mr. W. PRIOR.

This case was introduced to my notice in April of last year by the patient's brother, residing at Thatcham, Berks. Consumption had been in the family. Had commenced in this instance in the very frequent way-by cold, failure of appetite and strength; then cough, spitting, expectoration with blood, perspirations, hectic; then rapid loss of flesh. Dr. P's report: "Right lung diseased."

My treatment was commenced at once. In one month there was a perceptible change for the better. The brother writes, " Cough less; as regards pain and breathing, the Liniment gave quick relief. The patient has got out a little. have great hope he will be about with us again."

We

Continued improvement through May. In the latter end of June a slight relapse through cold. From July to September progressive improvement, and to the end of the year.

At the commencement of the present year the patient went to business. July 1st, Mr. W. Prior writes:

66

My brother's recovery is complete. He has been five months in his situation. You are aware that in April last year he was given up by his doctor, who said no more could be done for him, and we at once sent to you. From that time we carried out your instructions to the full, and had no advice but yours. You cannot think how thankful we are that we did so, for otherwise he must (humanly speaking) have been numbered with those that are no more. When we first wrote you he could hardly walk upstairs. An egg beaten up with milk was all that he could take. Now he says he never was so well in his life. There could not have been a more wonderful cure than his, and people say it is miraculous. You are at liberty to publish this. Yours faithfully,-W. PRIOR, PROSPECT COTTAGE, THATCHAM.”

DECLINE.-CASE at ASHBY (Linc.).

On the 12th of April, I received (on my printed form of questions and answers) a full statement of this patient's case (SARAH HANNAH STOW).

[Let me here observe that such a statement will suffice, if the Question Sheet (to be obtained from me) is properly filled up. There is no real necessity for any patient to come to see me, and advice and medicine are sent to any part of the kingdom immediately upon the case being thus placed before me.]

Consumption had been in the family. Complaint commenced with pains in the side, with other usual symptoms, which gradually got worse. For two months the flesh and strength had rapidly declined.

On the 4th of August, I received a letter from the patient's father, in which he says, "Many thanks for the restoration of my daughter, by the blessing of God upon your medicine. She is quite well, and has taken a situation. I should have written before, but waited to see how she might be when she resumed work. I am happy to say there has no symptom returned.-E. STOW, ASHBY, BRIGG, LINCOLN

[merged small][ocr errors]

I may add that I reduced the charge for medicine, the case being recommended to me as worthy of such consideration by Rev. J. JACKSON, Wesleyan Preacher, of the Brigg Circuit.
