BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.

JAMES E. MCKELVY, Captain, Company M, was born in St. Cloud, Minn., January 17, 1863, and was educated in the public schools and in the State Normal School of his native State. At the breaking out of the Spanish-American War, he was Sheriff of Stearns County. He served ten years in the cavalry branch of the regular army; enlisted in Company L, 1st U. S. Cav., 1883; reenlisted in Company H of the same regiment in 1888, going through all the grades from Corporal to Battalion Sergeant-Major. He participated in the campaign against the Crow Indians in 1884, against the Piegan Indians in Northern Montana in 1885, in Riel Rebellion in 1886, and against Sioux Indians in 1890–91. He was wounded in the left shoulder and hip while campaigning against the Indians in 1884. At the breaking out of the Spanish-American War, he organized Company M in St. Cloud and was mustered in as its Captain, serving in that capacity throughout the Philippine campaign.

LEIGH D. BRUCKART, 1st Lieutenant, Company M, was born in Independence, Ia., August 11, 1876. He was educated in the public schools of St. Cloud, Minn., and afterwards attended higher educational institutions in Boston. He entered the University of Minnesota in the class of '98, and later engaged in newspaper work in Minneapolis. He was enrolled as 1st Lieutenant, Company M, and was mustered into the United States service, May 7, 1898. He was in command of Company M from February 23d to March 25, 1899.

HARRY J. LIMPERICH, 2d Lieutenant, Company M, is a resident of St. Cloud, Stearns County, Minn., where he had been engaged in business a number of years prior to the beginning of the Spanish-American War. When the call to arms was sounded, Company M was organized in St. Cloud and subsequently was incorporated in the 1st Regiment, Minnesota National Guard, which, on May 7th, became the 13th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. Upon the organization of Company M, Mr. Limperich was recommended as the 2d Lieutenant by Governor Clough and he continued to serve in that capacity throughout the Spanish and Philippine War.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.

EDWIN M. CONRAD, Captain, Company K, is a native of Minnesota, having been born in Stillwater, February 25, 1872, in which city he attended the public schools, taking afterwards a course at the Shattuck Military School, from which institution he graduated in 1890. In civil life he is a cigar dealer. His military record dates from July 5, 1892, when he enlisted as a private in Company K, 1st National Guard, State of Minnesota. He was elected and commissioned 2d Lieutenant in July, 1893, and promoted to 1st Lieutenant, December 14, 1894. He was mustered in as 1st Lieutenant and Battalion-Adjutant when the 13th Minnesota Volunteer Inf. entered Uncle Sam's service, and served in that capacity until July 24, 1899, when he was promoted to Captain of Company K.

JOHN J. WALSH, 1st Lieutenant, Company K, was born in Minneapolis, March 1, 1867. He was educated in the parochial schools and received further training in a Minneapolis business college, from which institution he graduated. His occupation in civil life is that of bookbinder, his residence being in Stillwater, Minn. He enlisted in Company K, 1st National Guard, State of Minnesota, on December 9, 1886, serving subsequently as Corporal, Sergeant and 1st Sergeant. On December 14, 1894, he was elected and commissioned 2d Lieutenant, and held that rank up to the time of his muster into the United States service. He was mustered as 1st Lieutenant of the 13th Minnesota Volunteers on May 7, 1898. He was in command of Company K, from October 1, 1898, to July 24, 1899.

G. HOWARD GRANT, 2d Lieutenant, Company K, was born in Reading, Pa., November 11, 1869. In the public schools of that city he received his education, removing later to Stillwater, Minn., where he was engaged in the newspaper business at the time of his muster into the United States service. He joined Company K, 1st National Guard, State of Minnesota, April 24, 1888, as a private, being promoted subsequently to Corporal, Sergeant and 1st Sergeant. On May 7, 1898, he was commissioned 2d Lieutenant of the 13th Minnesota Volunteer Inf. While in Camp Merritt he was in command of provisional Company B, from June 26th to September 2, 1898.
