David Ryckaert, peintre flamand, était fils d'un autre peintre qui portait aussi le nom de David, mais dont les tableaux sont peu recherchés. David Ryckaert le fils peignit d'abord le paysage; mais bientôt, à l'imitation de Teniers, il plaça dans ses tableaux des figures pleines d'esprit et de sentiment.

On voit ici une réunion nombreuse telle que peut l'offrir une fête de village. Le mérite des tableaux de cette nature consiste principalement dans l'effet et dans la couleur. Cependant on peut voir dans cette composition des groupes gracieux et de la plus grande vérité.

Le peintre s'y est représenté au milieu, assis devant une table et dessinant. It paraît prendre un croquis du groupe de danseurs qui occupe la droite. Près du peintre est un vieillard à grande barbe, qui tient des lunettes à sa main, et semble porter son attention sur le groupe. On peut penser, avec quelque raison, que c'est le père de l'artiste. Du côté gauche sont des dames, causant avec un cavalier qui revient de la chasse.

A VILLAGE FESTIVAL.

David Ryckaert, a Flemish artist, was the son of a painter named also David, but whose pictures are very little sought after. David Ryckaert Jun. at first painted landscapes, but soon, like Teniers, he introduced in his pictures figures full of spirit and feeling.

The beholder is here presented with a numerous assembly such as a village festival might offer. The merit of this kind of pictures lies chiefly in the effect and colouring: yet this composition contains graceful groups and great fidelity.

The artist has represented himself in the middle, sitting before a table and drawing. He appears to be sketching a group of dancers on the right hand side. Near the painter is an old man with a long beard, holding his spectacles, and whose attention is seemingly attracted by the group: he may reasonably be supposed the artist's father. On the left hand side are some females conversing with a man on horseback, just returned from hunting.
