We need not repeat our description, but we will add that Christ's disciples alluding to the loss of the precious ointment, indignantly exclaimed, that it might have been sold for much, and the money given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she bath wrought a good work have the poor upon me. For ye always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. » This picture by Paul Veronese is in the Palazzo Durazzo, at Genoa. The composition is good; the heads have a character of grandeur: that of the Magdalene is graceful and delightfully fresh. The hands are correctly drawn, and the draperies well treated. The general tone of the picture is clear and of an admirable effect: it is also in high preservation. It was engraved by Volpato in 1772. Width 14 feet 10 inches? height 10 feet 1 inches? |
