PREFACE

In these days of practically universal education, the Dictionary has become as necessary for the needs of the mind as bread is for those of the body. Such works vary in kind and character, from the voluminous and costly Unabridged Dictionary, adapted to the needs of the advanced scholar, down through varied grades to those >suited for ready reference and of size convenient alike for he desk and the pocket. The present work belongs in the <latter category, but may justly be claimed as ranking among the fullest and most complete of its kind. Its special features are the following:

First. It contains the words of the English language in ordinary use, together with many new words which have recently come into use.

Second. The words are conveniently divided into syllables, n the manner employed by the best writers.

Third. The proper use of capitals and small letters in writing is indicated by the capitalization of the initial letter of all proper nouns.

Fourth. The pronunciation of each word is shown by a clear and properly accented system of phonetic spelling. Fifth. The definitions are accurate, embracing the recent distinctions and shades of meaning.

Sixth. Each word and its derivatives are specially indexed,
