BUFFALO LITHIA WATER

In Uric Acid Diathesis, Gout, Rheumatism, Bright's Disease, etc.

DR. J. W. MALLET, Prof. of Chemistry, University of Virginia: Extract from report of analysis of Calculi discharged by patients under the action of BUFFALO LITHIA WATER:-"It seems on the whole probable that the action of the water is primarily and mainly exerted upon Uric Acid and the Urates, but when these constituents occur along with and as cementing matter to Phosphatic or Oxalic Calculous materials, the latter may be so detached and broken down as to disintegrate the Calculus as a whole in these cases, also thus admitting of Urethral discharge." JOHN V. SHOEMAKER, M.D., LL.D., Professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics in the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia, etc."The BUFFALO LITHIA WATER is doubly efficient in Rheumatism and Gout. It dissolves Uric Acid and Phosphatic Sediments as well as other products difficult of elimination, while at the same time it exerts a moderately stimulant effect upon the renal cel, and thereby facilitates the swift removal of insoluble materials from the body. Without such action insoluble substances will precipitate in the kidneys and bladder. The intense suffering produced by stone, together with consecutive pyelitis and cystitis, are avoided by prompt elimination, E. C. LAIRD, M.D., Resident Physician, Hot Springs, N. C., formerly Resident_Physician at Buffalo Lithia Springs, from New York Medical Times of March, 1896:“Gout, Rheumatism, and all Uric Acid troubles are markedly relieved by both Nos. 1 and 2 BUFFALO LITHIA WATER. I have now under treatment a most interesting case of 'Senile or Gouty Heart' in which my patient is comparatively comfortable, and often able to attend to large business interests, so long as he is fully under the influence of these waters, but to suspend their use for even one day so intensifies all of his symptoms of failing circulation as to utterly prostrate him."

DR. ALEXANDER B. MOTT, of New York, Professor of Surgery, Bellevue Hospital Medical College, Surgeon Bellevue Hospital:-"I have made sufficient use of the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER to be satisfied that it possesses very valuable therapeutic properties. In the Gouty Diathesis, Chronic Inflammation of the Bladder, and other diseases affecting the Urinary Organs, it may be relied on to give the most satisfactory results."

DR. WM. F. CARRINGTON, The late Resident Physician, Hot Springs, Ark., Surgeon (retired) U. S. Navy, Surgeon Confederate States Navy, Medical Director Army of Northern Virginia :—“BUFFALO LITHIA WATER, Spring No. 2, has sig nally demonstrated its remedial power in Gout, Rheumatic Gout, Rheumatism, Uric Acid Gravel and other maladies dependent upon Uric Acid Diathesis."

DR. W. O. BASKERVILLE,

REFFERING TO SPRING No. !.

Oxford, N. C., Member of North Carolina Medical Society, says: "I belong to the army of physicians who regard the water of BUFFALO LITHIA SPRING a sovereign remedy in the Uric Acid Diathesis, Gout, Rheumatism, and allied affections, neutralizing the materies morbi in the blood and removing the deposits about the joints. It is a positive solvent of Uric Acid."

DR. JOHN T. METCALF, of New York, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine, College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York:-"I have for some years prescribed the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER for patients and used it in my own case for Gouty Trouble, with decided beneficial results, and I regard it certainly as a very valuable remedy." DR. MARTIN L. JAMES, of Richmond, Va., Professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics, Medical Society of Virginia [Proceedings of the Richmond, Va., Academy of Medicine, Dec. 16, 1880]:-"The President of the Academy, Dr. M. L. James, reported three cases of marked Uric Acid Diathesis successfully treated by the Water of the Spring No. 2 of the BUFFALO LITHIA SPRINGS of Virginia. In one of these patients there were, as results of this Diathesis, Sandy Deposits in the Urine, Inflammation of the Kidneys, Irritability of the Bladder and Hæmaturia, and, finally, the passage of a Calculus of the size of a cherry, formed on a blood-clot as a nucleus."

BUFFALO LITHIA WATER

In Albuminuria of Bright's Disease, Pregnancy and Scarlet Fever.

[ocr errors]

SAMUEL O. L. POTTER, A.M., M.D., M.R.C.P., London, Professor of the Principles and Practice of Medicine and Clin. ical Medicine in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of San Francisco, Cal., in his "Handbook of Materia Medica, Pharmacy, and Therapeutics," in the citation of remedies under the head of "Albuminuria," says: BUFFALO LITHIA WATER of Virginia is highly recommended."' Under head of "Chronic Bright's Disease," in the citation of remedies, he says: "Mineral waters, especially the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER of Virginia, which has many advocates." DR. GEORGE M. MILTENBERGER, Professor of Obstetrics, University of Maryland, before the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, 1886, recommended BUFFALO LITHIA WATER as an alkaline diuretic in Albuminuria of Pregnancy.

T. GRISWOLD COMSTOCK, A.M., M.D., St. Louis, Mo.-"I have made use of BurFALO LITHIA WATER in gynæcological practice in women suffering from Acute Uræmic conditions, with results, to say the least, very favorable."

DR. HENRY CARPENTER, of Lancaster, Pa.:-"I have found BUFFALO LITHIA WATER highly efficacious in Uræmic Poisoning supervening confinement." DR. JOHN H. TUCKER, of Henderson, N. C., says: "In Albuminuria of pregnant women BUFFALO LITHIA WATER has proved a great blessing."

DR. CALEB WINSLOW, Baltimore, Member of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland-"I have found the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER of marked service in relieving the Nausea of Pregnant Women. I frequently resort to it at intervals during the whole course of Pregnancy. Being antacid, diuretic, and tonic, it seems well adapted to relieve the disturbance usually attendant upon Gestation, and I have no doubt its free use might remove Uræmic Poison, and prevent Convulsions produced thereby."

DR. PRESTON ROANE, of Winston, N. C.:-"In a case of almost total Suppression of Urine, in a woman in the latter stages of Gestation, with strong threatenings

of Convulsions, after exhausting, without effect, the most potent diuretics of the materia medica, I put her upon the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER, half a gallon a day, which produced a copious action of the kidneys, followed by relief of the alarming symptoms. I attribute the safe termination entirely to the use of this Water."

DR. P. W. YOUNG, Oxford, N. C., after advising the use of BUFFALO LITHIA WATER in some other conditions, writes:-"I recommend it with much more confi

dence, however, and have seen results much more remarkable from it in the latter months of Pregnancy, when there is Edema from imperfect action of the kidneys, and when Albumin is present in the urine. Its action in this condition of the system prevents Puerperal Convulsions." DR. JAMES B. M'CAW, of Richmond, Va.. Honorary Fellow Medical Society of Virginia, Emeritus Professor Medical College of Virginia, etc., speaks (Vir.

ginia Medical Monthly) of “the great value of these Waters in Albuminuria of Pregnancy.” DR. C. W. P. BROCK, of Richmond, Va., ex-President National Association of Railway Surgeons, Member Medical Society of Virginia (Virginia Medical Monthly), writes:

"During the epidemic of Scarlet Fever, prevailing for a year in this city, I have been giving BUFFALO LITHIA WATER ad libitum, to the exclusion of all water for drinking purposes. In no case since I have pursued this course have I seen even a trace of albumin in the urine of Scarlatina patients, either during the attack or the convalescence. With this experience, and hearing of favorable results in the practice of other physicians who have used the same means, I have thought it worthy of note."

Pleasure and profit may be most happily combined by a sojourn at LEVICO, the MODEL EUROPEAN SPA recently opened on one of the finest southern slopes of the Tyrolese Alps, and near the border line of Sunny Italy. Nature and art have there united to create a popular resort for well and sick that leaves nothing to be desired by patrons accustomed to the conveniences of the best health establishments in the world. There, too, will be found much of interest and value that is as yet possessed by no other Spa!

LEVICO this youngest of Spa Establishments-stands alone among them in its all-pervading quality of excellence. Here has been found at last a Health Resort indeed, having every natural advantage fructified to the highest point by the systematic application of the most recent devices of the Sciences and Arts: a cheery yet restful retreat, possessing every attraction and convenience for repose and recuperation, every rational means for treatment of the ailing, and an abundance of objects of interest and pastime for the well. It is probably the only Watering Place today, of throughout up-to-date completeness, as well as thorough harmony and perfect adaptation of construction and equipment. Placed in the most tonic and yet mildest dry air mountain climate, on the southern slope of the Tyrolese Alps-among charming scenic surroundings, at the head of the lov ly Sugana Valley-in a region hallowed with medieval and classical reminiscences, and replete with objects of historic interest; every resource laid open by the art of landscape gardening, by the inventions of modern architecture, and by the discoveries of hygienic science, has been employed at Levico, to supp ement the natural beauty and salubriousness of the environment, and to creat in its midst a Health Establishment comprehensive in every direction, of entire symmetry in its elemen s, and absolutely fitted to its important mission.

Like careful attention has been bestowed also upon the satisfaction of the aesthetic and social requirements of patrons; while opportunities for mountain and forest excursions, for aquatic pleasure trips, abound naturally on every hand.

When gentlemen with such world-wide reputations as have Professors Billroth and Kraft. Ebing, of Vienna, and Eulenberg, Ewald and Gerhardt, of Berlin, unite in extolling the virtues of Levico water, for chronic skin diseases, anemia, neuroses, malnutrition and other affections where iron and arsenic are indicated, it is evident that this is more than an ordinary mineral water.
