The same. HAWKINS' FIFTH EDITION, with additions. Post 8vo,
London, F. & C. Rivington, &c. 1792.

morocco extra.

This edition is revised by John Sidney Hawkins, son of Sir John Hawkins, who states in his advertisement that he had found on the margins of a copy of the fourth edition, "corrections and additions by the last editor, which, though not many, have been all made use of on this occasion, from a wish that the book might receive the advantage of his last corrections." 346

The same.

HAWKINS' SIXTH EDITION.

Post 8vo, morocco extra.
London, 1797.

"A paginary reprint of the preceding, the engravings (with the exception of the tackle-plates) being suppressed altogether."-T. W.

THE ABOVE SIX LOTS, FORMING A FULL SET OF THE DIRECT HAWKINS' SERIES, 6 vols. post 8vo, UNIFORMLY BOUND IN FULL GREEN LEVANT MOROCCO, CRUSHED AND POLISHED, FULL GILT SIDES, BACKS, BROAD INSIDE BORDERS, AND GILT LEAVES, by BOSQUET. ALL CHOICE PICKED COPIES. Together, $150.

"Modern commentators have been slow to acknowledge the value of Hawkins' editorial services They pooh-pooh his Piscatorship, carp and cavil at his science, and put on double spectacles to discover his enthusiasm, and fail. That he had weak points, and that these were of them, we do not deny; but as a pioneer in his department he has, we repeat, a claim to our regard and recognition, which it would be ungracious to repudiate."-Chronicle of the Compleat Angler.

347 WALTON & COTTON. The COMPLEAT ANGLER, &c. (Title same as in the

London, Bagster, 1808.

FINE COPY, rare in this size.

"This edition is Hawkins redivivus as regards the notes and biographies, but the new editor (Bagster himself, we believe) revised and made some addition to the former. The engravings are still those of Ryland and Wale, but executed afresh from the original drawings by Audinet and in very creditable style. The plates of Fish are finely finished and faithful, and are the best associated, hitherto, with the work."-T. W.

A large portion of the edition was destroyed by fire in Bagster's warehouse.

"The editorship on this occasion was confided to Mr. Henry Ellis, of the British Museum, and compiler of the first list of angling-books. His additions are mainly Bibliographical and Biographical. A fresh series of plates of fish was given with this reprint, and are superior to those of 1808."-T. W. 352 WALTON and COTTON. COMPLEAT ANGLER, &c. Ject, and portrait of Walton by Scott, from the picture by Housman, is prefixed.

GOSDEN'S EDITION.

(Title same as the 4th edition of Hawkins.) Post 8vo, hf. mor., portraits and plates, &c., neat. $5.00.

London, printed for James Smith, 1822.

"This edition was by Gosden, the sporting bookseller; it includes Hawkins' notes and biographies, and no other innovations than a new set of plates (15 in number, Lowndes states erroneously, 21) and a preface, not written, we presume, by Gosden himself, who, though an enthusiastic lover of angling literature, was possessed of little education."

Cotton, £25; Milner, £2/16; Grace, £2/12/5d; Lowndes, £2 /14.

354 WALTON & COTTON. THE COMPLETE ANGLER of Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton; extensively embellished with engravings on copper and wood, from original Paintings and Drawings by first-rate artists. To which are added an introductory essay; the Linnæan arrangement of the various river-fish delineated in the work; and illustrative notes. 8vo, crimson morocco extra.

London, John Major, 1823. MAJOR'S FIRST EDITION on LARGE PAPER, brilliant India proof impressions of the plates; the margins very neatly ruled with red lines.

* RARE, on large paper.

"Dazzled as our eyes are with the splendor of our recent typographical successes, we may wonder at the amount of admiration excited forty years ago by this pretty book, which was looked upon as a marvel of its kind, pointed out as such on the shelves of libraries, or passed from hand to hand, amidst the encomiums of delighted connoisseurs. The old drawings by Wale having been engraved for it in more finished style by Cook & Pye, the wood cuts of fish skilfully executed, and the editing performed by a practised and competent hand (Mr. R. Thomson, author of the Chronicles of London Bridge, 1827)".-T. W.

355

The same. MAJOR'S SECOND EDITION. Title same as in the foregoing (with some additional notes). 8vo, crimson morocco extra.

London, 1824.

LARGE PAPER, INDIA-PROOF PLATES, the margins ruled with red lines. Bohn's Lowndes says: "The old plates, 'rebit,' but a difference of size, and other variations, negative this statement. The new ones were engraved by W. R. Smith."-T. W.

356

MAJOR'S THIRD EDITION. See lot No. 368.

The same. MAJOR'S FOURTH EDITION. New series of plates by Absolon. 8vo, crimson morocco extra.

[blocks in formation]

LARGE PAPER, with INDIA PROOFS of the plates. "This more nearly approaches our ideal of an edition consistent in all its parts than any of its predecessors or successors. Wales' designs are here suppressed, and a new series by Absolon substituted. They are quaint, unaffected, and picturesque, and have the signal merit of seeming an emanation from and efflorescence of the book itself, rather than a set of artistic notions grafted on it."

357

WALTON'S LIVES of Dr. John Donne, Sir Henry Walton, Mr. Richard Hooker, Mr. George Herbert, and Dr. Robert Sanderson. To which are added the autographs of those eminent men, now first collected; an index and illustrative notes. Only a few copies issued in this sumptuous style.

This edition (first issued in numbers) was the result of seven years' patient research and fostering care on the part of its publisher. Paper and type, as might be expected from a publisher preeminent for the beauty of the books issued by him, are both admirable in their kind, and the titlepage, as Mr. H. R. Francis rightly remarks, is of a perfection that might "trouble the ghosts of the Aldi."

The COMPLETE ANGLER, &c.; with copious notes, for the most part original, a bibliographical Preface, giving an Account of Fishing and Fishing Books, from the earliest Antiquity to the time of Walton, and a notice of Cotton and his writings by the American Editor. To which is added an Appendix, including illustrative Ballads, Music, Papers on American Fishing, and the most complete Catalogue of Books on Angling, &c., ever printed. New York, John Wiley, 1852.

The THIRD AMERICAN EDITION (First, 1847; Second, 1848), edited by Dr. W. G. Bethune. "Could we admit the necessity of erudition in this case, we should be disposed to assign to Dr. Bethune's version a foremost rank in the annotated series. The wisdom he brings to bear upon his task is of the benevolent order, cordial, reverent, and sympathetic, and his criticism has nothing in common either with the flippant or dry-as-dust school. For the lover of angling-books, and for the collector especially, there is no edition so useful as this."-WESTWOOD: "Chronicle of the Complete Angler."

383 WALTON and COTTON. THE COMPLETE ANGLER, &c. (Causton's Edition.) With a new Introduction and Notes, and embellished with 85 engravings on copper and wood. 12mo. (cr. 8vo), hf. green morocco, gilt. $3.00. London, Henry Causton, 1851.
