left the usual scar. In discussing this phase of the matter, one of her female friends exclaimed that it was all wrong for her to have submitted to such an operation. "For," she said, "the best surgeons nowadays never remove a tumor that way, but reach it by cutting through the pajama, when, of course, there is no scar."

Health Commissioner Reynolds will install at the St. Louis Fair an exhibit which he intends will demonstrate why Chicago, built in a swamp, has a death rate less than that of other big cities. Dr. Reynolds also wishes to show how he is constantly decreasing the death rate. Inspection of milk is one of the things of which the Chicago Health Department is proud. Photographs of the public bathing beaches and thirty charts, with the figures showing the decrease of consumption, whoopingcough, diphtheria and many other maladies, are a portion of the health's department's exhibit.

To determine whether the oysters which supply the New York market are exposed to contamination, a series of investigations was sometime ago undertaken by Dr. Walter Bensel, assistant sanitary superintendent of the health department. The conclusions reached by Dr. Bensel are, briefly, as follows: (1) That the beds from which oysters are taken for consumption in the city often lie in grossly polluted waters; (2) that the process of "freshening," "fattening" or "drinking," often performed as it is in small streams badly contaminated with sewage, is a most dangerous practice and should be discontinued.

The Chicago Board of Health during the past four weeks has reported a number of cases of hydrophobia in several dogs, which had already bitten a number of human victims as well as other dogs. They apprehend an epidemic of rabies. Everyone should help in enforcing the muzzling law, and stray curs should be disposed of. Cases of smallpox continue to be shipped to Chicago from outlying points. Of the eighty two cases discovered since the first of the year, the most searching examination has failed to find a single one properly or recently vaccinated. The department is to be congratulated upon the important and commendatory editorial regarding its work and standing which has recently appeared in the New York Medical Journal. It is a satisfaction to observe the recognition of a capable management.

TROPHONINE

A Tonic Food, Especially Adapted to this Season of the Year.

Not a beef-tea without nourishment, but contains the true beef juice, together with the nucleo-albumens.

Not a predigested food, but aids digestion when the enzymes enter the stomach. Not a sugared water, but a food that adds the fat necessary for your patient. Not a brewers' malt, but the true gluten of wheat. The peptones are perfectly balanced by the carbohydrates in the gluten, consequently the tissue building products are not given off as nitrogen in the excreta. This is very important during convalescence. Send for interesting and profitable literature.
