The Tower of Babel. The Confufion of Languages.

HE Sons of Noah, by their Saviour bless'd,

The Son of Andito num rous Tribes incres'd:

From lofty Ararat they now descend,

And with the Sun, their Guide, ftill Westward bend:
Their Language and their Dialect the fame,
To Shinars fruitful Plain they journying came.
Vain of their Strength (but what is Strength in Man?
A vaft Attempt they in Ill-Hour began.

See where the Tow'ry Walls of Babel rife
And threaten, and almoft furmount the Skies!
What Hills on Hills the bufy Pifmires caft,
What fruitless Care, and unavailing Haft!
Diftrated men! Is this, is this the way
To reach the Confines of eternal Day!
Or did you thefe ftupendious Buildings frame
To boaft your Pow'r, or aggrandize your Name?
Alike in vain! Behold th Almighty mile
At your Attempts, and blaft your impious Pile!
Confus'd your Dialect, you all difperfe
In various Tribes around the Universe.

And thou'd a Second Nimrod proudly rife,
And reassume your War against the Skies;
Kingdoms on Kingdoms pile to raise his Throne,
Or waft the trembling World to reign alone :
With equal Eafe can Heav'n his Pride confound,
And lay his fhor:-iv'd Babel fcatter'd on the ground.
