DRS. A. B. GIANASSO and V. E. Ovazza. The therapeutical value of Phytin in resume of clinical studies executed at the pediatric clinic of the Marie Victoria Hospital, in Turin, Giorn. di Ginecologia a di Pediatria, Turin. No. 13, July 1, 1905.

The examination of the blood after the Phytin treatment has always been satisfactory. Regarding the augmentation of the number of hemoglobin and the number of red corpuscles and of the morphological amelioration, the microscopical examination permitted the observation of the disappearance of abnormal forms. Another thing to be noted in the fisrt series of observations is that the number of cosinophile cells which were primitively low as in the case of individuals whose organic reaction is very feeble, although still keeping account of the quite important numerical variations that these leucocytes suffer even in the normal state, we are still in the right in affirming that, thanks to the precautions and to the constancy of the results. Phytin provokes a real and constant augmentation of the number of cosinophile cells. We attribute to this fact an immense importance, for numerous observations (Gianasso, Giorn, acc. di. Turino, 1904), prove that the numerical increase of the cosinophile cells in the blood of debilated patients, especially in the presence of antecedent tuberculosis, is the index of an augmentation of resistance of the individual, of a diminution of the virulence of the disease, and of an amelioration of the general state.

The S. & H. Maternity Outfits.-The attention of the readers of this journal is called to the advertisement on page xv.a of the Misses Standon & Hunter, 19 Isabella St., Toronto. Those ladies have inaugurated the supplying to physicians and their patients of complete maternity outfits. These Cutfits are very often a great boon, especially in emergeneics, and doctors will, after this, be able to procure them by telephoning N. 3773. They are put up in several forms as can be seen from the advertisement referred to. When it is remembered that both Miss Standon and Miss Hunter are graduate nurses, it will be understood that the outfits put up by them are in every sense complete.

Digests all Food, Especially Proteids. We again call the attention of the Canadian medical profession to the fact that Lyman Bros. & Co., Toronto, and Lyman, Sons & Co., Montreal, are Canadian agents for the preparations manufactured by The American Ferment Co., of Jersey City, N.J. One of the main preparations of this firm is Carcid, an article which has had a very large run all over the United States, and has received the endorsement of the best medical men across the line. Caroid represents a very marked advance over other so-called digestive preparations, being made practically non-hygrosopic and vastly more active, especially in the direction of converting starch. When it is considered that Caroid acts in either an acid, and alkaline or a neutral medium, digesting albuminoids and fats and readily converting starch, its action not being affected by the many conditions that interfere with the action of animal ferments, it will be seen that it is an ideal digestive.

MODERN THERAPY, SURGICAL APPLIANCES, ETC.

Vomiting of Pregnancy Relieved by Bovinine Injection,-In a severe case of vomiting in pregnancy, Bovinine was injected rectally every three or four hours for a period of three weeks, the patient taking nothing by mouth, except occasionally a little water, and being relieved of the vomiting. The rectum was washed out twice daily with salt and water before the administration of the enema. The patient gained in weight and strength until able to sit up, whereas she was unable to raise her head off the pillow when treatment was begun.-W. E. Shaw, M.D., Cincinnati.

Meatox Powdered Dry Beef Absolutely free from Preservatives. The essential difference between Meatox and Meat Juices or Meat Extracts, is that Meatox contains all the nutritive elements of Beef, while liquid extracts of meat are merely stimulants. Meatox contains from 65 per cent. to 70 per cent. of proteines and albumose, and about 22 per cent. of common salt, 2 to 3 per cent. gelatine, 2 to 3 per cent. fat, 6 to 8 per cent. water, and inert substances. Therefore, one pound of Meatox contains the nutritive substance of 5 to 6 pounds of fresh beef. Meatox can be given to the patient in its original powdered condition, 1⁄2 ounce (about a teaspoonful) morning, noon, 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. It can also be administered with milk, cream, fresh butter on toast, filtered water either cold or warm, beef tea or bouillon, honey, pure malt, soft boiled eggs or soft omelet, cereals, barley, wheat, rice, etc., cooked green vegetables. Two ounces of Meatox being administered to a dyspeptic patient every day in connection with the little amount of other foods which he can partake will supply him with all the proteines contained in 11 ounces of fresh meat, which is a little more than anyone needs to eat every 24 hours in order to keep up his strength.

The Very Thing for a Physician. The peerless Lehman carriage heater gives a continuous heat for fifteen hours from one brick of Lehman coal. Spraying for Diseases of the Respiratory Passages.- Dr. David. Walsh, senior physician to the Western Skin Hospital, London, writes: Glyco-Thymoline was brought to my notice as an excellent lotion for nasal and oral sprays and washes. On due inquiry it was found to fulfil the two conditions usually recognized by medical men in the United Kingdom as. vouching for the character, so to speak, of such a preparation. First, its advertisements are accepted by our three leading journals, the Lancet, British Medical Journal, and the Medical Press & Circular. Secondly, its composition is not a secret, its formulae being freely published. Under these circumstances I determined to try the effect of this preparation in a few suitablecases. As a general antiseptic that does not coagulate albumen and is nonirritant, deodorant and practically non-poisonous, Glyco-Thymoline has clearly a wide range of usefulness. My own observations, however, have been practically confined to its use in the nose and mouth, with results that have proved satisfactory in every instance, especially in acute coryza, pharyngitis, influenza and septic conditions of the mouth.

The Hygiene of Erindale Farm.-The cattle located on Erindale Farm have a home that very few farms can equal; the stables are modern in structure, with cement floors, the divisions between the cows are constructed of iron; each cow is secured with a stanchion; spring-water in automatic water basins, stationed at the head of each cow, is always available at their desire. The means of light is obtained with almost constructed walls of glass, while numerous electric lights remove the darkness at night. No feed whatever is contained in this building, it being stored and mixed by electric motors in an adjoining barn, and conveyed to the cows in cars that are operated on overhead rails. When visitors enter this building they are greeted with a cheerful and contented herd of fine cattle. Noxious odors are wholly absent, and everything is scrupulously clean, indeed, these model buildings, with a superior and contented herd, and such a farm, with all its natural surroundings, is all that is required to produce the very best of milk. Such care of barns, buildings and cows is unusual and extraordinary. It results in a pure, clean and superior milk, perfectly suited to the nursery and table, a fact of particular interest to physicians.

Tono Sumbul (Wm. R. Warner and Co.)-Tono Sumbul has been used with excellent results by the medical profession for a number of years; the formula combines the positive nerve tonic and stimulating properties of Sumbul Root, in conjunction with acid phosphates, and the blood-making properties of iron, the general systemie tonie action and antiperiodic qualities of cinchona, with only sufficient aromatic sherry wine to make it palatable. TonoSumbul acts as a diffusible stimulant, supporting the general system; superior in its sedative action to bromides, as it does not depress or produce any untoward effects. It tones up the stomach, assists digestion and favors assimilation, enriches the blood and sustains the heart, produces increased bodily weight and strength. Does not contain coca or any ingredient which might induce a drug habit. Indicated in all cases of debility, nerve exhaustion, insomnia, hysteria, neurasthenia, neuralgia, et. It is particularly valuable in cases of nervousness of a low, depressing character. Is the remedy par excellence for nervous hysterical females who need building up. Dose.Tablespoonful to be taken before meals.
