ye therefore unto the partings of the highways, and as many as ye shall find, 10 bid to the marriage feast. And those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good and the wedding was filled with guests. II But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man which 12 had not on a wedding-garment: and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding13 garment? And he was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall 14 be the weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few chosen.

The Tribute Money.

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might ensnare him in 16 his talk. And they send to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one for thou re17 gardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou?

lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or 18 not? But Jesus perceived their wick

edness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye 19 hypocrites? Shew me the tribute

money. And they brought unto him a 20 denarius. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Cæsar's. 21 Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's; and unto God the things that 22 are God's. And when they heard it, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

Marriage and the Resurrection.

:

23 On that day there came to him Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection and they asked him, saying, 24 Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his 25 brother. Now there were with us seven

brethren and the first married and deceased, and having no seed left his wife. 26 unto his brother; in like manner the second also, and the third, unto the 27 seventh. And after them all the woman 28 died. In the resurrection therefore whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the 30 power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven. 31 But as touching the resurrection of the

dead, have ye not read that which was 32 spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the 33 living. And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

The Greatest Commandment.

But the Pharisees, when they heard. that he had put the Sadducees to silence, 35 gathered themselves together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a 36 question, tempting him, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the great and first command39 ment. And a second like unto it is this,

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hangeth the whole law, and the prophets. 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a ques42 tion, saying, What think ye of the

Christ? whose son is he? They say 43 unto him, The son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

44

The Lord said unto my Lord,
Sit thou on my right hand,

Till I put thine enemies underneath

45 thy feet? If David then calleth him 46 Lord, how is he his son? And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Scribes and Pbarisees, Hypocrites. 23 Then spake Jesus to the multitudes 2 and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat: 3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and 4 do not. Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their 5 finger. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the bor6 ders of their garments, and love the chief places at feasts, and the chief seats 7 in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of 8 men, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi : for one is your teacher, and all ye are 9 brethren. And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, IO which is in heaven. Neither be called

ye masters: for one is your master, even II the Christ. But he that is greatest 12 among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be

humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he has become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, 17 he is a debtor. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor. 19 Ye blind for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the 20 gift? He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all 21 things thereon. And he that sweareth

by the temple, sweareth by it, and by 22 him that dwelleth therein. And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise
